Problem with small animals causing car damage...

CAGiversary!
So my wife goes to get her oil changed and the mechanic tells her the cabin air filter in her SUV has a huge hole in it and something has clearly been chewing on it and apparently trying to make a nest in the area.

Her car only sits long enough for a little critter to do something like this at 2 places, home and work. We are 99% sure it is happening at work simply because nothing has happened to my car at home and there are no other signs of little critters in or around our garage/house.

She has also found out that over the past 3-4 weeks, several other employees have complained about various damage to vehicles while at the office. One of which resulted in close to $4k worth of damage to a completely destroyed electrical system.

She parks near an empty lot while at work that apparently is home to rabbits, mice, prarie dogs and squirrels. Unfortunately, this is the location of the employee parking lot and is basically the only place she can park so simply moving to another lot isn't a solution. Her employer is "taking steps" to eliminate further damage, sounds like just putting out a few traps, but I was wondering if there is anything else we can do.

I know they make some electric deterrants for gardens and stuff. I was hoping to find some kind of portable device that would run on batteries and could be left inside the car during the day but I haven't been able to find anything so far.

Any advice outside of sitting on the hood with a pellet gun, telling my wife to take the bus or find a new job?

I think you can sue the employer IF you can find proof that the employer has known about the problem for a long time and has done nothing about the issue.

I bet you money it's either rabbits or mice doing this. There is a major airport that has this problem where people would come back to their cars after a few days and find all the major wiring systems destroyed.

The people sued the airport in most cases.

My grandmother once had a squirrel or some other animals place nuts inside her car, kept her from being able to shift it out of park. I'm sure that was one surprised mechanic.

This happened to me in college. Squirrels took up residence in my car, chewed a bunch of wires, and deposited a ton of acorns before leaving. The check engine light came on and the car stalled twice while I drove to the mechanic. Cost like $400. The parts weren't the problem, they only cost like $20... it was that it took 5 hours of labor to replace all the wires and remove the acorns. After that I made sure to park on a high level of the parking garage.

"Why does it smell like popcorn whenever I start my truck...."

You should tell her to buy a coyote and tie it to her car.

That's what I did when I had those pesky street urchins trying to make a nest under my car.

Yeah, but next time it'll be flying squirrels that chewed up your wires. My mom's Blazer had the same problem, but the culprit was mice.
Wow, I live in the country and don't have this problem, but this is happening in the CITY? :hot:
City vermin aren't scared of shit. You can live in the city and come across some pretty hardcore birds, squirrels, etc.

3rd about the piss, and you can actually buy animal predator piss from some outdoor places.

Strange, but it works.

From my experience, hitting animals with your car is a clean getaway. They make a bit of a mess, but nothing that the rain won't take out (though bits of fur and parts may get caught in the grill - just use a toothbrush to scrub them out.) Frankly, I don't see the problem here. Just take a sharp stick or something and poke around where you think the animals are hiding. If you feel something like a rabbit, just skewer through it. As long as the animal dies, that's all that really matters. If there's nothing in there... well, maybe next time.

Frankly, the feeling of crushing a life in your bare hands is just superb. Enjoy the little things in life, I say.

People need to walk more anyway. America is full of out of shape, overweight people. So walk to work. It's good for you and great for the environment.;)

Thankfully I have been out of college for 2 years... and I am almost certain it took place there as I've never had any issues at my now-husband's apartment. Plus, the animals at my college aren't afraid of anything like you said, as there's always people around.

2nd'd.

People in the city are the biggest pussies when it comes to walking. I have a friend that will drive two blocks.

Then again, this is the winter, but still...

So it's been seconded, we have passed a resolution to critters gnawing on the wiring in your SUV: STFU and walk to work, you pussy.

If walking doesn't keep the critters out of the SUV, I'd create a boundary using any bodily fluids I could get my hands on. The way they used a circle of ash in LOST, just start walking slowly around the SUV while shitting/pissing/dumping fluids. Make a couple passes just to be sure.

This will definitely work because the critters are afraid of predators -- also, they're very hygienic. Prairie dog will be like, Hey, Rabbit, go chew that fucker's SUV, and Rabbit will be all, Hell naw, dawg, shit be err where! Get that freak Squirrel, I ain't down with this nasty ass shit!

why would u walk to work??? After the end of a working shift im tired and would rather get home asap and relax
