Project Gotham Racing 3 gripes

I love every game of the PGR series, but I’ve got more than a few gripes about Project Gotham Racing 3. Maybe I’ll air the rest of my dirty laundry here later, but right now my biggest problem is the damned ghost system.

When I start a time trial in career against a ghost, it works alright. But when I restart the race, the next time the ghost will start about 2 seconds late. In a fast lap, where you get a rolling start, the ghost doesn’t even begin its rolling start until after I have passed the start/finish line, making it about 30 seconds late on a restart. So what the hell good is it? Now I don’t see any body else complaining about this glitch, so maybe it’s just me and my Xbox… somehow.

Does anyone else have experience, solutions, or information relating this?

yeah i found it really boring in general no real rush for me in the game and i found it annoying whenever i hit a wall....but then again that's just me...

I've found PGR3 to be the eye candy launch title for the 360. Each console has had one. I'm going back to Gran Turismo.

I don't know what world you're living in that Gran Turismo made a Sony console launch, so you should pick better examples.

PGR3 in terms of gameplay is fine. The only flaw is really the Kudos system. WTF is the point of drifting between cones?

It makes the game fun , Debbie Downer .

It's cool to do shit that you can't do in real life .

My gripe are the car nazis that get pissed and kick you out of the room if you don't have new ones. fuck those assholes. I'm tired of being told that I can't join a session in any game because I haven't downloaded an update with new content (not complaining about patches and software updates that ARE needed, thats understandable)...

Its not quite the same amount of excitement as say Burnout Revenge but it is incredibly rewarding when you beat a race in PGR3.

Um... I think he meant that PGR 3 was all style, and no substance, and he's going back to Gran Turismo for his racing fix?

Because I have no clue how you got that Gran Turismo was a launch title for the PS2, because that's a pretty big connection to make from his one post.

Unless you were purposely trying to be a douche, but failed.

Thank you Roufuss for showing Frisky the light. :) I, too, don't understand how he misread my comment.

Some additional gripes I have about PGR3...

In game shadows

Those damned shadows are TOO dark. I can't see shit on some of the city course and usually end up hitting a wall because of it. (Don't tell me to turn up the brightness. Brightness settings should have NOTHING to do with gameplay.)

Gameplay controls

Why is it that these cars are so damned squirreley? I swear it's as if I were driving a rear-wheel drive car with slicks on wet pavement. Yes, I get it, they are powerful vehicles, but come on, do the tires HAVE to break loose every time I apply the slightest pressure on the gas?

He said PGR3 was the pretty launch title for the 360 and that every console has had one, going back to Gran Turismo. Where did I make a bad connection? :whistle2:s If he meant the pretty showcase game, then launch title doesn't need to be there.

I have one question about PGR3. While I enjoyed PGR2 very much, I hated that when I'd brake, the brakes would sometimes seem to lock up and I couldn't turn to avoid the wall, even when I came to a stop. Is this still in PGR3, and therefore an intentional gameplay element, or has it been fixed?

Ok, I see where you got confused. The last sentence should have read "I am going back to playing Gran Turismo 4."

Oh it's there alright. Very frustrating. :bomb:

Okay, putting those words back in changes the message. Thanks for clearing that up.

As for the braking thing, that sucks, but I'll still probably get it for cheap (paid under $10 for PGR2) whenever I get a 360.

If you jam on the brakes then yeah, your steering will lock up...same in every game w/ "realistic" handling characteristics. And you can't turn when you have no forward momentum.;)

I'm talking about the point at which you hit the gas and turn to avoid hitting the wall. Even when I'm at a complete stop and hit the gas and turn, it would still go straight into the wall so I fuck up my combo.

The handbrake seems to help me out a lot if I'm about to hit a wall, but you still have to be carrying some speed so that probably doesn't help. fucking Kudos system. I'll never get all Platinums.

Well, I guess I can pile on my issues about the ghost system a bit more.

Why in the hell did they switch it to be based around Kudos? IE: Your best ghost is the one that got the most Kudos, not the one that is fastest. I understand the reasoning in that the true point of the game is to get the most Kudos, but that doesn’t do me a lot of good if I can’t get to the finish line in time. I don’t know how anyone else plays this game, but I play it by getting as fast a time as I can, and then filling in the free space with some Kudos-scoring slides. But it’s pretty fucking hard to get faster when I don’t have a ghost to show me where I’m fast and slow. You know, the point of a ghost? As if the game even tells me how many Kudos I actually had at a given point on the track on the ghost run.

Fortunately this problem only arises if you manage to set a ghost in the first place. Why is that problem? The game only creates a ghost after you WIN a challenge. What in the fuck? The only way I see to race your own ghost in a challenge you haven’t beaten already is to create a ghost on an easier difficulty. But because the damned ghosts are Kudos-based it still won’t help you get to the finish line in time. Previous games in the series set ghosts pretty much constantly. On a hot lap, you got to keep racing around in circles and the game would continuously update your ghost (in PGR2 I think you were limited to 3 laps a time). It would also tell you how far ahead or behind your best time you were. This was good. PGR3 only lets you race a hot lap once, making the only difference between the Hot Lap and Timed Run the rolling start, and it won’t set a ghost for anything but victory.

Someone please tell me I’m insane, and these changes in fact either have perfectly reasonable workarounds or make the game better.

What car are you using , maybe try a slower one until you learn the intracicies of the game .
You have to play it the way they want you to , not the way you expect it to be played .

I used to hate Ridge Racer , until I played it thier way .

If you want to complain to someone who can do something about it , or answer why ,
do that here http://www.bizarreonline.net/forum/index.php .

I know the ropes of the game. This series is about driving perfection, and I'm saying the tools they give me to achieve perfection are flawed, and what's worse is that they used to be good.

Maybe I'll post at Bizzare Creations. They should at least be able to explain why ghosts start late the second time.
