pros & cons about XBOX live.

fullhavok

CAGiversary!
hey all, i just got xbox live 3.0 & i'll be setting it up & loging in on tuesday (my next day off) so i wanted to get your pro's & con's and your feelings on the whole xbox live experience.

thanks in advance. :)

P.S. I can't wait to go live!!! :D

it kind of sucks cuz u have to buy a lot of brand new games because after a few months people stop playing most games. sports games are the way to go. only if they had a MMORPG that didnt charge a monthly fee that would be golden

lol....nice

anywayz yea i hate the lil ones that get on. maybe its cuz we didnt have sumthing like this at that age. maybe we are all jealous

CON- PAYING A MONTHLY FEE FOR A MEDIOCRE SERVICE!!!! Thats why most games on ps2 are free, theyre good and dont need to have all the extra bells and whistles to try to "polish online gaming up". LIVE SUCKS!

Haven't found many problems. Seldom any lag...and regardless of what other people said there are still people playing most of the games on there regardless of when they were released.

You can play Soldier of Fortune II online, the Ghost Recons, Wolfenstein, the Sports titles not to mention the literally dozens and dozens of other games available. Plus the free downloads alone make up for the cost of the yearly fee.

There is WAY less lag on Live games than PS2 online games. At least that's my experience

for some reason thats not my experience. I ALWAYS get kicked. Its not that my providers slow either, cuz i got cable and usualy conect on an average of 400 kb/s

what monthly fee?? anywayz live smokes ps2 online... i have both and dont even bother with the ps2 online anymore...its lag central and doesnt have the features that live does.

I just recently signed onto Live, and while it is very good, I must admit that overall voice quality while chatting is MUCH worse than chatting on PS2 games. It sounds like the voice in XBOX games is very compressed, and during PS2 games the voice chat is just much cleaner. That's my only gripe about XBOX Live....although I do get a slight lag every now and then when playing Top Spin. Overall, Live is good, but I was hoping that the voice chat would be better than it was.

Yeah, I totally agree. There's Socom, Socom 2, uh...Tribes, Madden........uh, some other cool games.........

I wonder out of those who said that one sucks over the other if they're just being fanboys. I have both and like what each has to offer. At the end what matters is the games. There is slowdown and disconnect on both, and you'll find a**holes on both. It sure does beat playing the AI though.
What monthly fee?
maybe they are refering to Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II

$8.95 monthly fee after the 1st 2 months
Any MMORPG regardless of system will run you a monthly fee. That's how they keep their servers running.
well, i had PSO for a while, but never had xbox live till a few days ago...im gonna get as much as i can outta my free 2 months and then cancel my account...its not worth paying extra money every month just to play a game

XBOX Live has a monthly fee option that you can take rather than the annual one. I believe the option is like $6 a month. I think that is what he is referring to.

Admittedly I haven't played on Live a whole lot, so I can't say if it's worse or better. As I said before, the voice chat on PS2 games are better than on XBOX Live as I have done both a bit. However, the XBOX Live service seems to be very good and very robust. I am looking forward to playing many games on it. Hopefully MS can keep the costs of it down. Right now a $50 annual fee seems fair, but if they start raising their rates I may not think the price is worth the service.

Yes the kit is 70. So your getting Crimson skies (worth $20 bucks, The head set (Worth 30 bucks) and the year of Live (Worth 50 bucks). So your getting 100 bucks worth of stuff for 70. It's a decent deal and far from a rip off.

I like the service alot, you run into lamers some times but all online games have that including PC & PS2. Also you'll get new content and only a few games are ghost towns.
What is MMORPG? I know RPG. MMO? What games are they? Please name a few.
MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

It's like everquest or ultima online. It's basically thousands of people playing on servers in a world setting against and with each other.

Don't hold your breath waiting for an MMORPG that doesn't charge a monthly fee. They exist on the PC, but that's due to either (relatively) low player population or excessively wealthy/generous admins. A console MMORPG has an enormous potential player base, so if one starts out free, it would quickly sink the company behind it.

Mechassault owns. The bad thing is that someone gets dropped from the beginning maybe 25% of the time, but the voice is MUCH better than most other XBL games.

Live is superior to Sony's service, period.

I can't stand the log in times on the PS2 service and the lack of universal voice chat kills me. I have Champions of Norrath, Tribes and Twisted Metal and I've rented Outbreak and Destruction Derby. I didn't play any of them online for more than an hour before going back to Live.

As for the annoying kids, I'd rather mute them than have no communication at all.

PROs: If you have a fast connection, its relatively easy to find a good game.

Voice chat is pretty cool, but some games you could do without it.

It's fun!

CONs: Takes a while to build up your friends list especially if friends you know in real life don't have XBL

Punkass kids (and older peoples who act like kids), but that goes for any online gaming

Sometimes they don't match you up with equal competition, especially in Splinter Cell. Since there's no way really to practice you're guaranteed to get your ass handed to you the first couple of rounds

well, all you fanboys are griping over retarded crap so I'm compiling what I believe to be a a true pros/con list. I've been online with both consoles for about six months. The OP was interested in pros/cons of XBL, and since the only thing that compares is PS2 online, a lot of the cons will be generated from the pros of PS2 online.

PROS:
- Friends List.........undoubtedly the best thing about XBL, being able to tell when your compadres are playing, even if they are playing a different game (as long as it is XBL enabled)
-Voice Chat..........in every game, you are guaranteed to have voice chat (as far as I know, MMORPG's may be different)
-Lag..............Most games don't have much lag, but I don't see much lag on PS2 though, but I haven't done any racers, so who knows.
-One Platform........the games all have the same basic platform in which you find games..PS2 games can vary greatly from game to game.....
-Downloadable Content......this should be higher on the list as it is an awesome feature to extend the longevity of a game. but how long before they charge for every new content?

CONS:
-Host-dependent gaming......If the host drops..... EVERYBODY DROPS..... and that can suck.... Many PS2 games are not host-dependent, ie. if the host drops, you just keep playing. Also, only the host can boot people and sometimes they can leave some real assholes in a game.
-One Platform......Quick Search or OptiMatch. Its a bad system. Why can't you look at every game available? Why aren't there rooms set-up for lobby chatting (obviously only KB chatting). I call SOCOM2 as having a great system. You can look at every game out there, or you can change filters so that you see only games that meet your criteria.
-Cost.......it costs money.

That's all I can think of now. please feel free to provide comments as I am quite sure the list is not comprehensive and is based solely on opinion.

Ive played quite a few ps2 games online, tribes, socom 1/2, everquest, tribes, xiii...etc.
Does not compare to x-box live in the slightest, the cross title support is great, as is voice chat across all games. PS2 also has the problem of older games not being played as much as newer games, but if you want to play an old title its easier to go about finding players on xbox live due to the friends list, chances are someone else out there still has a copy (Mech Assault, Ghost Recon, and Unreal Championship were all games that came out at launch and theres no problem finding any games)(shit like outlawvolleyball is not played anymore for a reason)
Depending on the game opti-match is very similar to socom 2s system(counterstrike/rainbow six) older titles dont have it, but developers are catching on.

hey i want to thank you all for getting back. well i signed up & got cought up with other issue that day, so i wasn't on for long, but the few mins. i was on rocked! i work alot of hours at my job so ill be going live on my day's off. but if you guy's ever see me (gametag : FullHavok )
stop & say hi.. & if you don't mind adding me to your friend list. i'll do the same. and remeber guys & gals i'm a newbi so take it easy.

again thanks for everyone that got back.

all you guy's ROCK!!!

goodtimes!

Ive seen someone mention that the voice quality sucks...first off it doesnt...maybe the connection you used sucked?...My experience is it is almost as good as being on an telepone (hardline not cell)...second if the quality is "bad" or "mideocre" then its because its supporting a top of 16 players chatting while gun fire, gernades, bombs, mines, and other various objects are going off at once...with little or no lag (most of the time)...I cant say that much for ps2...And can PS2 even support more than 12 if 12? besides MMORPG's?

Do you mean 12 players? If so Socom supports 16. I have DSL lite and socom plays just fine for me . Anyone here use a slower/cheaper broadband connection on XBOX live??

Eh, it's ok, but it's hard getting past the yearly fee to play things that you could just as easily play a similar game on the PC or on the PS2 for free.

If Microsoft actually shows up with all the extra services they mentioned at E3, then I'll be happy to pay the yearly fee.
I'm with Garcia

Crimson Skies rocks, though
Which is why I was ranked in the top 30 at one point with over 110,000 players. :)
