PS1 Noob Alert (I'm the noob, not making fun of people)

I just got myself a PS1 and I've probably only ever played one say... 2 times in my life. I don't exactly know what to look for when it comes to buying PS1 games, there are thousands of them and I just don't know what to buy. I was hoping for some insight on the games that someone who doesn't own a PS1 wouldn't know about. I know about the Final Fantasy games, I know about the Twisted Metal games, Metal Gear Solid... All the big name stuff I don't need you to tell me about. But if I could get you guys to tell me some of your favorite games that didn't get mass media coverage I'd love it!

My Current Games:
Gex: Deep Cover Gecko (Saweet!)
N-Gen Racing (Totally cool)
Die Hard Trilogy (Very Nice)
Need For Speed (How did it get the same name as my 3DO game? They're totally different!? (But both kick ass! Booya!))
3Xtreme (Eh)
Syphon Filter 2 (Eh.)
Spec Ops: Ranger Elite (Eh...)

Anywho, try to use that list as a guideline of games I might like. Oh, and one more question, WipEout for the PS1... Is it the same game as the N64 one? I loved the 64 one and would like another WipEout game but not the same one on 2 systems if ya get me.

Thanks for all the help!

Destruction Derby is pretty cool, if you can find it
Bushido Blade is a neat "fighting" game
Suikoden 1 and 2, if you can find them

What type of games do you like
RPG?
Fighting?
Action?
Strategy?

Tell me that and I'll give more suggestions

Well, here's a few suggestions:

Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit(if you liked the original, this will blow you away)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2(it's the best THPS game on PS1)
Resident Evil: Director's Cut(just try it, since there are quite a few games on the system that are in this style of game)
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Also, get Wipeout 3 for PS1, cause Wipeout 64 basically has all Wipeout & Wipeout XL tracks

Thanks guys, sorry it's taken me so long to respond, I got into reading that post about the illegal NES system.

Ok, I have Tony Hawk 1, 2, and 3, (1 and 2 on my 64, 3 on my Xbox) So that one's covered, all the rest I'll check into. Mainly I'm into RPGs that you can just pick up and play, like the Dragon Warrior series. I also love racing games of ALL genres, as suggested by my love for NFS games, wipeout, n-gen racing, etc. As a matter of fact, I love pretty much any good game from any genre so just keep 'em coming!

this might sound silly, but during TRU's big clearance I picked up a little puzzle game called Turnabout. It was dirt cheap, and it is like video crackrock.

Some of my favorites:
Metal Slug X, Gran Turismo 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, R-Types, Chrono Cross, Resident Evil 123, Dino Crisis 1&2, Breath of Fire 3 &4, Tomb Raider 1 &2, Time Crisis, and Suikoden 1 &2.

Here are some of my suggestions, whether or not they are obvious choices for you already or you just may not like

All the Resident Evil games
Chrono Cross
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Grand Thedt Auto Double Pack(one with 1 and the London Extra disc)
Worms
Final Fantasy Tactics
Mega Man X games - all pretty cool if you like MM
Mega Man 8 - same as above
Mega Man Legends 1 - same as above(AVOID the second MML though)
Silent Hill series is alright, not my favorite though
Tomb Raider 1 is alright, but it pissed me off in points
Super Puzzle Fighter
Jumping Flash(REALLY old)
Ape Escape(one of my faves)
Soul Blade
Tobal No. 1 - fighting and a little action game as well
Battle Arena Toshinden (1 and 2, 3 kinda goes down hill)
Micro Machines - fun racing game

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (Best game ever.)
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (Sequal to the best game ever.)

Those two games are why everyone should own a PS1...or a PS2 I suppose.

Check out Silent Bomber. Its the best PS1 game that nobody played. Pure old school run and gun. The names a bit misleading as there is nothing silent about it. Everything explodes.
ne1 recommend ff7 ;)??
Well, it's pretty obvious that it's a must-own.

Anyways, here's my recommendations:

Destruction Derby - So nice it's worth being mentioned twice.
Driver - Its age shows, but it's still a blast.
Gran Turismo 2 - the best racing game available on the system IMO. I recommend buying a GH copy. The non-GH copies had some bugs that were fixed when the game went GH. I owned a non-GH copy at one point that froze while I was saving and corrupted my save file. Pissed me off.
Pro Pinball series - If you like pinball you'll dig these games. My personal favorite is Fantastic Journey.
Rayman - A little on the difficult side, but a fun platformer nonetheless. Amazing graphics.
RC de GO! - The closest you'll get to RC Pro-AM on PlayStation.
Ridge Racer - One of the best arcade racers ever created.
Qix Neo - A fun and addictive remake of Taito's arcade game from the 80's.
Sheep - A fun 2D game where you herd different kinds of sheep through obstacles.

Btw, all of these games can be found on the cheap.

Hope this helps!

The Test Drive games are similar to Need for Speed, I thought they were even better on PS1. If you like platformers, Spyro, Klonoa, and Crash Bandicoot are good titles too.

Klonoa as mentioned is a fantastic platformer...

Might I also higly recommend a few more overlooked gems...

Tomba! -combination RPG / platformer - a ton of fun and rather unique
Colony Wars - very epic first person space battle
Hello Kitty's Cube Frenzy - very addictive puzzler
N2O - very cool trippy shooter - think reverse Tempest on acid - great Crystal Method soundtrack!
Incredible Crisis - bizzarre game of mini games - sort of like a mutated Parappa the Rapper
Return Fire - a ton of fun 2 player
Roll Away - another underappreciated puzzle game involving navigating a sticky ball in 360 degrees

Just a few off the top of my head....and I know several of those can be found really cheap....

Ape Escape, Rollcage Stage II, Alundra, Blazing Dragons, both Oddworld games, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Castlevania: SotN, Ridge Racer 4...I could go on all day.

Try G-Police, Legend of Dragoon, Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen (awesome game), Test Drive 6, Tecmo's Deception (this games just out there and totally kicks arse, been playing it for nearly a decade it seems), and try and find Fear Effect 1 + 2.

Playstation overall is a pretty barren system when it comes to good games, so be very careful what you buy. There are literally hundreds of games that are complete and utter trash, and most of the rest aren't even worth trying much less owning. I suggest you first and foremost go and get yourself a copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, far and away the best game for the system. Check your local Blockbuster and they might have a brand new GH copy for $9.99, super deal. After that there are some enjoyable games like Return Fire, Metal Gear Solid, Alundra, N20, Suikoden, Vandal Hearts, Final Fantasy Tactics, maybe a few others that you should give a shot. Again, I highly recommend you try before you buy because there is such a high crap-to-good ratio on Playstation.

while you do have a point (about there being alot of utter crap) you make it sound like the ps1 has no good games, and IMO there are many.

i love my PS1.. if you can handle the load times it kicks the crap out of any similar system (Saturn or N64.. and to some extent a Dreamcast). GT2 is amazing racer, Parappa was innovative, Square became a powerhouse in RPGs because of this system. the only Genre I think that didn't get adaquete unique games was Sports titles. but Tactics Ogre is great. hmm cheap easy to find games.. MGS greatest game ever. Parasite Eve, Resident Evil started on PS1. don't count it out. it had plenty of A+ titles.

It sounded like I said PS1 has "no good games" when I gave a list of games to try? Sounds like you're not reading carefully enough! But there really aren't many good games for PS1, and only one great one (SotN).

well you listed 8 games and then put "maybe some others"

for a system that has close to if not over 1000 games, 8 games and a maybe sounds pretty weak
I'd say the PS1 has at least 4 great games but no more than 10.
here's 11 for ya:

poy poy
Castlevania:SotN
Vagrant Story
Herc's Adventure
Silent Hill
Kagero
Ape Escape
Einhander
Bushido Blade
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
Intelligent Qube

and thats just off the top of my head, im a sucker for RPG's si i tryed to stay away from them, i also tryed not lo list games you can play on other systems because they were later ported (metal gear solid, resident evil 2, ect.)

you also listend 3 "fighter" type games..

I enjoyed Tekken on the system (any sequel or the orignal)
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver was cool
this Ninja game (it was by Edios.. it was hard)
Tenchu
Spiderman and Spiderman: enter electro
hmm you can't go wrong with a square title on this system.. but those held their value well.

if you can import. I suggest Guitar Freaks and Beatmania. and the controllers.

It is weak. Playstation is one of the worst systems out there for good games, and probably the worst of all time (beating out even Atari VCS) for crap-to-good ratio. All IMO, obviously.
here's 11 for ya:
Agree

Castlevania:SotN

Haven't played

Herc's Adventure
poy poy
Kagero

No thank you

Ape Escape
Einhander
Bushido Blade
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
Intelligent Qube
Vagrant Story
Silent Hill

ooo.. i don't know.. i think the PS defined console RPG... think N64 they had what.. like 20 must own games and the rest were terrible. the PS had more than 20 must own games. i don't have time to list them here but i disagree with your "crap to good" ratio.. there is plenty variety of good titles for the system .

(as much as i love my xbox.. i hate the 1 RPG= 30 FPS on the system)

Hmm, I thought that the games on PS1 were great. I guess it depends on what type of games you played. I played a lot of sports games, rpgs and racing games, and a good number of them were very quality games.

castlevania: symphony of the night (one of my favorite ps1 games)
brave fencer musashi
wild arms (another one of my favorite ps1 games)
vagrant story
time crisis (if you have a guncon)
suikoden 1 or 2 if you can find them

and rival schools! :D

Well, I detest most turn-based RPGs, so those don't do anything for me. N64 is hardly the best system around, but at least it has more good stuff than Playstation. Same goes for Saturn.

More on tastes I suppose. I can't say I am a big fan of most sports, RPG and racing games, however.

get my votes in for Lunar 1 & 2, Arc the Lad Collection, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Origins, Castlevania SOTN,

ahhhh poy poy was some great shit...

I agree with punq on that one. Poy poy with 4 players is just utter chaos.
doesnt every system have a low amount of must own games. of course there is gonna be crap on there. But knowing everyone...we all like crap!
Here is some of the crap i like and that no one mentioned yet i hope
Grandia
SFA III
Ridge Racer Type 4
Fifa 99
Star Ocean
Breath of Fire 3
Legend of Mana
Megaman Legends I and II
Destrega
Ehrgiez
armored core

yeah yeah i know this list is mediocre but i liked it and maybe he will too even tho some of these games are hard to find...i suppose.

I was a late-comer to the PSone scene, too. Like you, I was on a quest to piece together a collection of "must own" titles. This is what I ended up with:

Brave Fencer Musashi
Castlevania SOTN
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy Chronicles
Final Fantasy Tactics
Gran Turismo series
Grand Theft Auto triple pack
Jet Moto trilogy
Metal Slug X
N20 Nitrous Oxide
Omega Boost
Parappa The Rapper
Um Jammer Lammy
Einhander
G. Darius
R-Type Delta
R-Types
Gradius Gaiden (import)
Raiden DX (import)

if we are going with imports there are some others i'd like to mention
Beatmania (although i'm sure its avaliable for PS2)
Guitar Freaks 1 and 2 (great "rock" music game)
MTV Music Generator.. (the first one had a lot of good ideas and cool tracks)
Metal Gear Solid
and finally Parasite Eve.
