There seems to be a lot of these out there, and I'm not sure which to buy for dance mats. Can anyone recommend one that works well for dance pads? It would also be nice if the converter cable was a bit longer, as the cords on the mats are a little short for my tv setup. DDR is the only thing keeping me from selling my PS2. ;/

I'm also looking for one of these but for arcade sticks. Supposedly the Pelican one is the best but it's $100...?

Markman is going to be reviewing the ant commandos one for fighting games. Keep an eye on the fighting game thread if you're curious.

He's also testing the music games.
I'm gonna wait for his review.

Is it safe to assume that rumble will not work with a PS2 to PS3 controller converter?
Nevermind, I just read the Ant Commando review. Van Dam!

I bought a ps2 to usb converter a long time ago at radioshack which it was made by radioshack. I used it for the pc,but it always works great for the ps3 as well.

Best one for the dance mats is the Pelican one. I have two of them. I bought them when they first came out but can be hard to find now. The second Pelican one I found at a Gamestop for about $6 so I would keep checking there for a used one. The radioshack one does not work well with dance mats but it does work well with Dual Shock 2 controller games and it also supports rumble (the Pelican does not). However the Pelican one has a PS button and the Radioshack one does not. Also the Pelican one has a selector switch for Guitar Hero 1 or 2. Thats probably why I ended up getting both brands.

Radio Shack ones have lag, some ppl might not notice it, but it is definitely there.

As far as response time goes, Pelican is the best one out there that was easily available in stores (used to be at least)...

There is another brand called "REAL" I will be reviewing in the coming week. Keep checking my site for the info.

Thanks for the info! I'm leaning towards a TAC converter (as pelican seems harder to find than a wavebird), but am a little afraid after your review mentioned it did not work for one of your pads. I'm using the soft Mad Catz pads (http://madcatz.com/Default.asp?Page=149&CategoryImg=PS2_Controllers) though, so they might work. Then again, I don't want to plunk $40 down for two converters that won't work (add a few more bucks for usb extenders). Maybe I should email TAC and see what they say first?
Why did Pelican stop making the Converter
i heard that Sony has to approve the 3rd party accessories that different companies make for their game systems. i think that Sony forced 3rd party companies to stop making these ps2 to ps3 converters because they want ps3 owners to focus on the ps3's features and ps3 software. it's like the same reason why they phased out ps2 backwards compatibility. Sony is basically trying to say if you want to play ps2 games then you gotta go buy a ps2. i think it's stupid because Sony would have made good money if they made official ps2 to ps3 converters because it would have given some people a reason to upgrade to ps3 especially with the early models of the ps3 that had full backwards compatibility, but that's just what i think, i just thought i would give my $0.02

I tested a new PS2/PS3 converter by a Chinese company called REAL. It is the REAL deal... Up there with the Pelican PS2/PS3 converter. It is pretty much identical in every aspect. It is the BEST converter out there for you fighting game freaks. It is not the best for Music lovers tho, that honor goes to the TAC one. I'll be doing a big reviewathon on PS2/PS3 converters in the coming days and put a feature together on what to get depending on what games you want.

New converter is only $11... I'm sure they're going to sell like MAD once ppl find out how well they work...

One strange thing is that I linked a pelican adapter with a Xbox-to PS2 adapter and it worked! I use the Xbox S-controller to play Lost Planet.

The REAL converter does look promising. If you could get the chance to test it out and let me know how well it works with dance mats that would be great. (I keep putting off ordering a TAC converter.)

Thanks Mark!

I bought the TAC controller thanks to good reviews (markman) and it works GREAT for music games.

Absolutely perfect.

My REAL converter doesn't want to work with rumble. Is there some trick to getting it to work?

It also sometimes sends an up signal when pressing the analog button on the Dualshock 2 to send a PS button signal. Is this happening to anybody else?

The replacement REAL does the exact same thing. What gives? I even reformatted my PS3 and tried games without loading my backup data first in case it was corrupted and caused problems with the rumble. No dice.

I don't know whether to keep these two converters because despite the lack of rumble they work or get a refund. For $15, this is two controllers for the PS3 I didn't have before, and sending them back for a refund would likely be cost ineffective, so I don't know...

Well, I was discussing this with MarkMan, and he believes that subsequent PS3 firmware updates since his review have rendered the rumble function of the REAL converter useless. The converter still works, but rumble is out. Major bummer. This was totally unnecessary of Sony.

I don't know if this has been addressed, but the REAL converter does work with Guitar Hero 1. I know this because I have been playing it on my PS3 through the REAL for the past few days. My GH1 guitar always had screwy tilt-action star power, but it worked on the PS3 as well as it ever did on the PS2. (I just use the select button instead.) It works well enough that I can get 97% through Bark at the Moon on expert. I'm not saying that the converter has faults that keep me from completing the song. I've never gotten that far into the song before, so the converter is doing its job well. I don't have any other PS2 Guitar Hero games to test it with, so I don't know first hand if GH2 or 80s has the expected problems.

I don't think rumble works with any converters now?

Sony might have something up their sleeve, I remember a friend of mine that works with Sony's upcoming products mentioned that they were considering a USB converter for their old controllers.
