This is might be a long shot but I have a 40GB PS3 that works except the laser doesn't read discs. (This firmware update for BD Live is what broke the console)
All the PSN games, internet, media center functionality works fine.
Sony will fix this if you send it in to them for around $140 and also give you a new warranty.
I'm asking around $80-$100 shipped but I'll consider any offer. The weight of it is gonna cost me a lot in shipping.
I will also throw in 2 Blu-rays from the following list in case you plan on getting it fixed by Sony.
