^^^this. Oh I knew your name looked familiar, every thread you've started is about an odd problem you need help with. Maybe you should get a hobby other than gaming? :)

LOL for real, thats some good advise. Just wash your hands before gaming and you shouldn't have any sort of controller problems. Every system I've ever owned still has it's launch controller in working order.

The analog sticks are the weak spot in Sony's controllers. Whatever lubricant they used in my DS2 dried up and I ended up buying a new one and my launch DS3 from a 60 gig BC PS3 had the analog stick sticking just a little north of dead center as that lubricant dried out and there didn't look like a good way to get more in/fix it.

Have controller on, then use a paper clip to reset it. You should feel the button click.

Perhaps the controller is just dirty, which is very possible. Try getting a damp rag and wiping down the D-Pad and hopefully some of the crud would come out (if that is the issue). Otherwise it could be a deeper problem where crust is so lodged into the D-Pad that you'd need to take the controller apart to clean or replace it.
