PS3 Hard Drive without stuttering
Can anyone recommend me a hard drive in the $50-70 range of at least 500gb or more that doesn't have any stuttering or other problems with the PS3?
I upgraded mine ~1yr ago with a WD500BEVT (Scorpion Blue SATA 500 GB). I've never experienced any problems and I
use my PS3 not just for gaming, but as my primary media player for local and streaming video. No stutter, and it's not loud enough to be heard over the PS3 fans, so as far as I'm concerned, it's silent.

Pricing:
It was $60+tax retail (Best Buy) and ~$40 after rebates (-$10 instant rebate, -$10 mail in rebate) way back then. Worked great; no stuttering, no format issues, just yank the old and plug in the new like the online tutorials all say. (Mine is a phat model, fyi, but I doubt that matters here.)

Now, how's this for providing lots of great info while still not helping you quite as much as you'd hoped:
I know i saw this exact model, still sitting in the same spot on the same shelf at BB this past weekend. So *yes* it's still out there, meets your criteria, etc. But *no* I of course did not think to look at the price. :)

Knowing BB, I bet it's still the same MSRP (maybe $5 less?) but without the instant rebate, and naturally no sale/mail-in rebate for such an older device. So whether that's worth it is kinda up to you. There are surely better deals online today, because there were better deals back when I bought this guy -- but back then I wanted to make sure I could buy it, test it out (I was hoping to avoid the same "stutter" issues you're worried about), and return/exchange it easily if necessary...and easy meant "brick and mortar."

But since you know this particular model works fine, you aren't bound by that and can probably find it on clearance or eBay or off the back of a truck in a dark alleyway or... etc ... for considerably cheaper. :)

500GB is not state of the art or anything -- but back then it was the largest you could get without having to go with one of those 12mm-high drives that didn't quite fit in the PS3 drive bay. You can probably find larger (GB) drives that aren't larger (physically) today, but many/most of those are going to be Advanced Format due to platter density and whatnot.

It's really not that hard to find a compatible drive, IMO. Just
check newegg (or some other online dealer with lots of user comments) and the manufacturer's forums and see if there are tons of people complaining about "drive model xyz doesn't work with my PS3." To date, I have yet to see a 2.5" drive for sale online that doesn't have *someone* commenting on whether or not it worked with his/her PS3. It's a popular thing to do. :)

Good luck and hope that helps a little! Cheers.

Thanks for any advice.
Well, you asked for *any* advice...so, you're welcome! :)
