I picked up a used 80gb PS3 (April 2008 build date, BC MGS4 model, came with receipt dated 6/2/08) today. Seems the HDMI port wont work at all. The multi-out works but I cant get anything from the HDMI. I've done the video reset and tried to manually set it but it seems the port is dead. (tried 2 cables and 2 tvs.)

I bought it as-is untested so I cant return it.

Everything work perfect, plays PS1, PS2, PS3 and blu-rays, just no HDMI.

Had firmware 2.40, updated to 2.80, didnt change things.

Any idea what I can do to get the HDMI working? (I dont really need a 2nd PS3, just took a gamble on this one.)

samething with me when I purchased a 60gb yesterday. Was told they werent working, and he didnt try much to get it to work. I tried a few things but no luck. Couldnt get the hdmi to work, so I went with component cables 1080i output not much difference. Most games are only at 720p, can always pay the $150 for sony to repair it. I may just hold off on mine, possibly later down the line to have it repaired if needed.

Do a "restore all settings" from the option bar, not the reformat one, this option will reset all your PS3's settings to factory default. I've found that this will also reset your PS3's HDMI handshake code (used to interface with the TV's copy protection) which is the usual culprit when HDMI doesn't work.

Basically there's something with certain cheaper, or older, TVs and the PS3 that causes the PS3's HDMI handshake code to get stuck, making it stuck to one TV, or even corrupted, making it unusable by other TVs.

Use the reset, then power off the TV. Plug in the PS3 to the TV via HDMI and turn both on about the same time. You can keep the composite cable plugged in if you'd like.

my friend had a similar issue where doing a hard reset (or whatever the technical term is) didn't work. are you trying to switch it with both component and hdmi plugged into the tv? if so, it's as simple as flipping to the hdmi setting on your tv within the 30 seconds or so they give you after manually changing the video output.

Hold down the power button until it beeps, reset will let you change the video settings. That or plug it in with your other cables and change setting to hdmi..

did u try to plug in BOTH the component and HDMI, then selecting the setting to HDMI via 720P and hdmi channel on ur tv?

maybe the hdmi setting on ur ps3 is 1080p and ur tv doesnt support it.
uncheck 1080p and select 720p.

I've done the firmware update, havent tried the factory reset, will probably give that a shot next.

I know its not the cables or the tvs as I have a PS3 already hooked up to the one tv @ 1080P.

the title is misleading... i thought the PS3 doesn't have HDMI output, which is totally incorrect. From the questions, it's really the PS3 can't output HDMI.

The PS3 auto detect the HDMI signals, so it's up to the connected devices. The factory reset probably will work, since you have no idea what kind of equipment the PS3 was previously attached to.

keep me updated if you get it working. I may try to fix mine, not that a big of a deal 1080i is solid. Cant really tell a difference between the two.

I tried the system restore, didnt seem to fix the HDMI output. I have it hooked up t 2 tvs, 1 for component and 1 for hdmi. I guess that port just doesnt want to cooperate.

Might see if I can make a deal with someone at work.

Im considering paying the $150 to have it fix, although the component cables in 1080i are still good. If it does eventually crap out on me, ill send it till then I may wait.
