PS3 kiosks in Best Buy!

Just went to best buy, and it had a ps3 kiosk. I was pretty underwhelmed w/ the kiosk in comparison to the Wii kiosk. Just the layout wasn't too exciting, and the fact that the sony LCD was smaller then the Wii's LCD was kind of a disappointment.

You can scroll through most menus, but almost all options are locked down.

There are multiple videos but only two games for play NBA '07 and Motor Storm. I'll be honest, these were pretty underwhelming to play as well.

NBA '07 isn't exactly my type of game, and I don't think it really is a good game to show off the system. The graphics were maybe marginally better then the 360. Player models were nice, but it still didn't feel SPECTACULAR and Awwing.

Motor Storm. Car models were good, and the crashes were nice, Popup was pretty minimal and draw distance was good, but quite frankly the game just isn't fun to play.

Sixaxis - FEELS CHEAP!!! Oh my. Everyone has been talking about how light it is, but it really doesn't prepare you for it. The controllers are attached to the system w/ a USB cable, and the clear plastic much like the PSP's, so it's totally movable and free floating aside from the plastic, but the controller just felt tooo light. The R2 and L2 buttons aren't too drastically different, but I still prefer the old layout. All in all I prefer the DS2 to the 6axis.

Also, apparently sony is so desperately low in systems, that they only sent the shell of a system to display, and the hardware was just the nuts and bolts hidden in the kiosk, that you can see by peering through the holes in the kiosk. The sytem that is being displayed is not being used AT ALL, and actually has paper covering some of the areas to demonstrate where the USB ports are.

Overall, quite a disappointment for me, I drove 25 min. to the Best buy in Jeffersonville, IN just across the river from louisville to play it, and it just didn't feel spectacular or that much bigger of a step above the 360 to warrant the extra money, and I AM ONE OF THE BIGGEST XBOX HATERS OUT THERE.

They needed better games to show of the system, and that failed, and the controller just flat out felt cheap. The lack of a FUNCTIONING SYSTEM was also a turn off.

I find it funny that there were only two games to be played and one is canceled.

And people wonder why we make fun of Sony? If Sony ever does anything right then we won't make fun of them.

Neither of those two games were canceled. EA's NBA LIVE '07 was canned not Sony's NBA 07.

There's still the inside of the system and the shell of the system, they just aren't together. Put them together and it still equals *gasp* a whole system.
Ohhh... Why do we need more than one sport game a year?
We don't. That's why it was cancelled, since you know, only 400,000 units, it's POINTLESS to have two NBA games.

I saw one at Target last night...saw the demo was NBA and just kind of went hmmm...boring and walked away.

I guess I should've described it better. If you looked at the interior of the kiosk, it was clearly not just the system w/o a shell on the interior, it looked like a random mess of crap, w/ no feasible way of assembling it into a functioning system. I guess what I'm saying is that it looked more like a developers kit or something of that nature. Not just a system w/o a shell. Bottom line, is that if they shipped a whole system to every target, BB, CC, Gamestop, walmart, etc. they'd be out at least 10,000-20,000 systems. Enough to account for an even bigger shortage of systems at launch.

NBA was such a bad game to show off the system. There is absolutely no pick up and play capability, unlike Call of duty 2 for the xbox 360 launch. Motor storm is more accessible, but it's just not fun. Playstation just continues to shoot themselves in the foot.

The kiosk I played at Target had a real system. The guy opened up the glass, pushed eject, I saw the disc spit out, he put it back in, etc.

I saw one last week at the Best Buy in Sycamore, IL (right outside of Dekalb - basically the BB for NIU students).

I thought there was an unusual amount of people there for a Saturday night around 9, but I attributed it to the Guitar Hero II demo (and myself trying to spend a $5 Reward Zone coupon before it expired :)).

Anyway, as I was looking for a DVD I noticed a group of people walking back and forth, back and forth. It was getting annoying, so I decided to peek around the shelves to see what the fuss was... and I couldn't understand what it was at first because they were just walking through the aisles not exactly looking at anything. So I just said fuck it and went to search around the store for something more interesting to spend $5 on.

Five to ten minutes later I walked back towards the DVD's and walked right past the kiosk. Something caught my eye and I turned around about 10 steps later and saw the PS3.

Now I understand why BB is so overpopulated on a Saturday night. I go over to the PS3... no one is playing it... and I start to realize why no one is... it's either off, BROKEN, or has no game. After walking back towards my friend and seeing the dejected look of a hopeful customer hoping to play it and being told something negative by the BB employee, my guess is that it's broken... but I'll never know.

After I laugh to myself about the situation at BB and head back to the kiosk I start to mess with the controller - definitely as light as they say it is, and has a nice feel to it, especially the shoulder buttons (at least for me, I have big hands so I was able to grasp the whole controller and my hands just gripped it nicely).

I haven't gone back, but I was very surprised to a PS3 in such a small small small BB.

Two of my friends played on a kiosk at Target. They were playing "some racing game," I guess it was Motor Storm since that's on the other kiosks. Anyway, a little bit into the demo the system encountered some sort of error and locked up.

They got a good laugh out of that.

I thought the same thing the first time, but more and more I think about it, I think it's just a built in timer to reset the system, cuz it happened, both when I was playing NBA and motor storm, and about the same time every time. It gets people on and off faster.

Maybe, but they said they got an error message of some sort and it didn't respond at all after that.

I'm not doubting that Sony would put a timer on its kiosks, but I don't think the timer would bring up an error message either. You'd think you'd get a "Thanks for playing" or "Demo over" message or something.

Yeah, it does seem kind of suspicious. I wouldn't doubt that it's buggy, as it was a very abrupt cut off, and I thought it had locked up, until it happened a second time. Let's justhope the full retail versions aren't as buggy.

The same thing happened to me tonight but at BB. Coincidentally it was also a little kid playing the racing game. I don't think it was a timer because the employees were all gathered around it trying to get it back. Luckily I got a vid of it on my phone ;)

Played Motorstorm at BB today. Felt like a 360 with a different controller.

I don't really like racing or sports games, so I didn't really get much out of it.

Played Motorstorm today. Didn't actually expect to see it. The most disappointing aspect was the small screen. Otherwise, the game looked amazing. Went over to Gamestop afterwards to try out Excitetruck, but the difference in visuals turned me away. Not that I don't like Wii, I have a preorder for it along with Zelda. Its just that after playing Motorstorm for PS3, Excitetruck just didn't look all that great.

I actually found the graphics to be really strange.

Like they were crisp to the point where it seemed like aliasing was off, but they weren't "jaggy." They were kinda "sparkly" and the motion blur just seemed a bit off. It looked cool, but out of place at the same time. It just seemed wayyyyyy oversaturated.

i'm a picky mofo, but it seemed like the graphics were technically "good" but the aesthetics were awful.

Our unit in the Waterford Lakes store in Orlando, FL, keeps locking up in the Motorstorm demo. I got giddy everytime it broke.

You know what more funnier than that, is that you claim sony never did anything right ok thats kool but if they did everything wrong why did they lead the last two gens?...lol but hey thats your opinion & I respect that you say whats on your mind, won't stop me from getting one.

There is one at my local walmart. It was just a video(I guess) and the system froze. Lol, good thing I'm not getting one.

P.S. Very small LCDs

Played Motorstorm at Target yesterday. Pretty amazing graphics. The lack of vibration seems like something important missing.

Then played Wii at EB. It's a whole new gaming experience. Graphics was a bit underwhelming since it's only 480p.

I played the Motorstorm demo at BB earlier today and, all in all, I thought it was a lot of fun. I tried playing it with the motion sensing controls for a while but I found it to be too difficult. When you're trying to steer by tilting the controller you can't recenter it as easily as you can with the analog stick. The demo at Target was actually easier to play with the motion controls because of the way the controller is tethered with a sort of rubberized bar that automatically returns it to a horizontal position.

Played Motorstorm at BB yesterday and I second this. When I played it at E3, it had no motion control. And remember, in reference to above, you don't have a rubberized bar at home to stabalize that thing, so any movement you make at all makes that car go nuts.

I think the motion controll will be dropped soon after launch and the PR will sound something like: "We tried that, but it wasn't the correct path to the future" or something.

I saw the PS3 for the first time at Wal-Mart last night. I went to pick up a copy of Robot Chicken (the sale started yesterday, costs $15.88!) and I thought I would check out the game department when this shiny, black piece of equipment caught my eye. There, behing the glass, was the PS3, teasing me and laughing at me (or was that in my head?). I heard over and over that the PS3 was huge, but I didn't realize how big this thing was until I saw it.

Unfortunately the controller wasn't a part of it, thus no games were available to try. Like many have mentioned the system wasn't even functional. At least I finally got to see the beast that is the PS3.

Just got finish playin NBA 07 and Motorstorm and if this is what PS3 has to offer I'm glad I'm eBaying one. Sure the graphics were great, but I've seen the same quality on my 360. I realize these are demos and it is only the first generation of games, but SONY really didn't impress me. Also if it is true about what EGM says about Konami putting pressure on Kojima to port MGS4 to the 360 SONY will take a huge loss.

360 has had a 1 year headstart. Many people felt the same way at 360 launch.

How is Call of Duty 2 pick up the play? Unless you are experienced in FPS it's ultimately pointless to even try to play it. In fact, I didn't ever play with a 360 in a store until I found a kiosk with Kameo and Dead or Alive 4

I'm not saying a basketball game is "pick up and play" but it kind of is more than an FPS, anyone can move the player up and down the court and eventually figure out what buttons shoots, what button passes, which is enough for an easy level exhibition game. The game won't turn off just because the other team scored a 3 and you didn't.

My experience playing CoD2 for the first time at a kiosk was trying to figure out the camera, then finding out how to move forward, then getting shot, then reloading, then trying to find out how to shoot, then getting shot, then reloading, finding out how to aim, then finally not getting shot within the first minute, but then after a few minutes, get shot again.

Also, if what is being shipped to stores isn't a whole system, then how in the world do you know six axis is that bad? I thought the controllers were supposed to be wireless.

If anything, that's what's worse about this PS3 launch. Not only is there a shortage of systems across the whole country, not only will most of us not get to actually own one in a month or two, but the Wii/360 camp have given it bad enough press and are way too vocal..

Speaking of which, I got the new EGM today in the mail [free, yay!] and was surprised that MOST of their Wii games rated average or low, in fact, most reviews mentioned how tricky or hard to learn the Wii controllers are, and this is on mass appeal games [Dragon Ball, Monkey Ball, etc] So much for even grandmas being able to play, if paid critics [and video game enthusiasts] have trouble getting used to it.

Have you played any games yet Zog? Trust me there is no significant difference IMHO. Like I said it might matter depending on your TV, but overall SONY doesn't offer anything special. Also what is up with them stealing the "360 Home" button. Also is it me or does it seem that the Sixaxxis controller is just a compilation of stolen ideas from Nintendo and Microsoft? Also those L2 buttons sort of suck.

Trust me regardless of how easy a sports demo is to pick up the NBA 07 demo is horrible compared to any FPS demo. SONY is so full of themselves that they couldn't even show off other developers games on a demo disc. I wish SONY would just give up on their Basketball franchise because it is dead and will never be revived. Motorstorm had some decent effects with damage/destruction/explosions, but the track demoed is Blah. I guess the developers figured you would focus more on the vehicles than the courses themselves.
