PS3 region compatibility?

Hey everyone. I was just wondering if the PS3 (North American) is able to play Japanese games. I heard, before it was released, that a North American PS3 would be able to play Japanese and NA coded games. Is this still the case? And does this also apply to Japanese PS2/1 games? I was just wondering because I am going to be studying abroad in Japan in April and wanted to pick up a bunch of ps2 titles over there.

This has probably already been answered in the sticked ps3 101 thread,

PS3 is region free for PS3 games only. PS3 is region-locked for PS2 and PS1 Games(Physical only, the PSN downloadables are region-free IIRC).
