So im looking to get a PS3 and thinking the used market is the way to go via ebay or craigs list. However i have been coming across some ps3s that need repairs like the disc drive...is it worth doing yourself? or just hold out and wait for a good deal

Agreed with the above post. If it's the disc reader or laser.. it's gonna cost you a good hunk of change.

Also to add to that, even if they state it's one problem, there might be additional things that are wrong with the system and/or problems that may arise due to the age of the system.

I've always found spare "working" parts to be significantly cheaper. If you're not scared to get you fingers dirty, do it. The slim only has like 4 major components to remove from it. The only thing I can see being really expensive is the logic board.

The disc drive is easy to change. Anything else, could be very difficult. I would test the PS3 to make sure it works, but only the disc drive is broken. Unless it's ONLY the disc drive, I wouldn't mess with it.

If you're confident enough in your own technical skills, then I say go for it, OP. But if you aren't that handy in the first place, then you're better off buying a new PS3 rather than messing with someone else's system.

The disc drive is probably the easiest repair out of the entire system, as I've known a few people who repaired/replaced theirs.

Thing is, the most common problem with the disc drive is the SAME issue the PS2's had at times: dirty lenses.

A little rubbing alcohol, a q-tip, some time and patience and you could have a great working system.

My one ex buddy from CAG/PSN even went so far as to take apart the lens and clean the mirrors the beam bounces off of and that made his 60 gb PS3 read like new again.

That is one dedicated SOB. Does he have professional experience fixing parts like that or something?

Actually no, he's just like me and likes taking apart stuff to see how it works.

I did that with a PS2 fat model last gen. I took it all apart down to where I had almost everything(cept the chips/components on the boards)taken apart.

I then left it like that for about a week, then re-assembled it, just to see if I could do it and have it work like it did before I took it apart.

Lo and behold, it not only worked just like before, it actually read discs even better.:D

Of course, it helped that I bought it for the whopping price of $15 from a local shop, back when the PS2's were still selling for $150 new. If I had paid anywhere near MSRP for it, I don't think I would've done it.

i am fairly handy i built my own comp work on my own car....soo if i can get a good deal on it and its only the drive thats bad i should go for it possibly? Also what makes the systems backwards compatiable the drive or the logic board?

From what I've heard there are two versions of BC. There is a software emulator and a hardware chip.

That's how my ex buddy from CAG said he used to have his system, with the top of the console ready to be taken back off on a moment's notice. Once you have the system apart, apparently it's easier to just keep it apart to re-clean anything that may get dusty again.

The Emotion Engine on the motherboard is what makes it backwards compatible. No way to change/move that.
