CAGiversary!
This article kinda amused me. It was the one titled, "Sony Talks About the Future of PS2". This is what I found funny:
OK, I'm hating and loving this statement. Hating it because it should've said:
"Sony decides to take another leap by copying Microsoft's tactics even further. First they build-up their online community after seeing it doing well with Xbox, then they try to get headset support on all their online games, and then, the biggest sign of them all, they create an HDD for the PS2. Now, they try and remake Live for the PS2."
OK, OK, I know that the above thing I said isn't ration in some parts, it's just my Xbox fanboyness kicking in when something good happens for the PS2. Well, not really, I mean, you gotta admit that Sony has tried to copy Microsoft in some ways. But anyway, I don't wanna get gang-raped by PS2 fanboys, so let's say why I'm loving it. I'm loving it because that means another console I can have a great online experience on, which is always enjoyable. Like I said awhile back, I don't hate my PS2, I love it, just not as much as my Xbox.
Oh yeah, I also wanted to add a comment about the 10-year-lifespan SCEA predicts for the PS2 since they mentioned it on the same page as the above article. Who the hell will be playing their PS2 four years after the PS3 comes out? Unless the PS3 isn't backwards compatible, if it isn't, that's understandable, but if it is, it's not. I still had my original Playstation till about two months ago after getting the PS2, and I never plugged it up once after the first time playing the PS2 since it's backwards compatible. But still, what do you call lifespan for a system? Sure, there was like one game this year released for PS1, but ppl still play a lot of old PS1 games, mostly RPG's. But they're not coming out with new games, it's just ppl playing it. It's like saying the SNES has 15-year+-lifespan, which is retarded.
With online gaming becoming a major part of the PS2 lifestyle, Sony is stepping up plans to evolve the online experience. In the near future, it will begin working with developers on creating a more consisten online world.
What this means to gamers is the introduction of a single username and login feature across all games, and a central "hub" where players can meet up, chat, and plan games / tournaments. SCEA says publishers will retain control over game content, and the idea isn't to change a monthly fee for these new convenience and matching features.
