PSP @ Comic-Con 06: New firmware coming 7/27, and more...

MICHAE2414

CAGiversary!
IGN link: http://psp.ign.com/articles/720/720194p1.html

The gist of it:
 • The PSP will act as a remote for the PS3. I wonder to what extent - extra game controller = unlikely; portable PS3 media browser a la LocationFree = possibly
 • A PSP Greatest Hits ad campaign is coming out, starting July 25.
 • There's a new firmware version coming next Thursday, 7/27, which will support RSS video feeds.
 • The update also includes a World Tour Soccer 2 demo (downloadable like Loco Roco, I'm assuming).
 • There are no plans for a new text-entry interface, nor are there plans for an add-on keyboard.
 • Sony's working on getting more PSP-supported Wi-Fi hotspots for web access -- possibly like what Nintendo did with its DS and Wayport?
 • Sony says video-out capabilities are being worked on.
 • Sony Connect wants to bring out downloadable movies for the PSP, but implementing the DRM is still an issue.

Take what you will, but there's some worthy news here, IMO.

Hmmm... If it weren't for the fact that I use my PSP for MP3s, there is a good chance I wouldn't use it at all. There hasn't been a single compelling game to purchase since SFA3 came out...

Well...Tekken comes out this week.

Bleh fuck the download unless it's a full Crystal Kay video collection in full res. then I'm game or better yet just DISABLE the region coding for UMD Music! X-(

Are they even trying? It seems to me that if someone wants to topple Nintendo in the handheld market they should try a lot harder and respond a lot quicker. I'm surprised the haven't announced Min-Blue ray UMDs and a motion sensor add on for the PSP yet.

Motion sensor was supposed to come out last year with Mercury...sadly it never did

That's what I was talking about. I bought a PSP and mercury thinking it had it and it didn't. It would have been a 100% better game if it did. I wonder what happened.

the video RSS feed thingy is great. Through this you can actually stream your videos you have in your iTunes on a seperate computer and watch them... it's the firmware I've been waiting for for a while, since I have a ton of videos converted already that I want to stream to my PSP without taking space.

oh, and Sony has already announced about 2/3s of that stuff already, but it's just reasuring with the dates. thx op.

is that what that does? that's actually really cool. can you stream them from your computer anywhere you go? (I don't know the first thing about RSS)

I still have yet to do a total test of the RSS with out of home home cennection but it should work. I've done it quite a bit with the MP3 RSS feeds, so I'm sure you can do it with video... I hope to see gaming sites incorperate this use eventually or something.
Can't you stream videos to psp using 1.5 homebrew?
just as a reminder:

homebrew and official are almost two different worlds. This firmware thing anyway dosn't really apply to homebrewers.

They need to enable full-resolution for memory stick movies. I don't even homebrew, but that's what keeps me from updating.

Excellent point adam. My only thing is I'd like to be able to not just make something full res. like that but get a menu and everything going.
There has to be some kind of hack or mod to enable full resolution video playback. I assume it's just a matter of time.
Ahem I don't want my PSP to end up getting BRICKED in the process.

I definitely look forward to the Soccer demo, as I'm not going to buy a PSP soccer game until Fifa 06/World Cup come down to $20 or less. I'll grab the english Loco Roco demo when I update, also (I've had the Jap one since it came out but never updated to 2.7 to get the english version). I hope Sony will put out more demos in the future and that they won't take up hundreds of MBs.

Any news on the downloadable PS-One content/games? I thought this was suppose to be available in early May??? At least give us a projected release on it ... I'm SO looking forward to downloading some old school classics.
