PSP second thoughts?

I keep going back and forth with getting this...mainly because I'm wondering if my $300 (PSP value pack + Spider-Man 2) in EB credit could be spent better elsewhere. I'm sure I will like the PSP it's just I can't help but think how I could get 3 gamecubes or 2 PS2's for what I am spending (well actually I'm not spending anything as it is free after the TRU\EB deal) but still. Anyone else having second thoughts?

It does upset me that the controls suck for Darkstalkers...meaning they will stink for all fighters. Plus most of these games are something I have played before.

I'm tempted but I think I'm going to wait a while until there is something I really want to play that comes out for it. I'd also like to pay $200 or less for the system alone instead of being forced to spend an extra $50 on crap if I want to buy a PSP...

First off, can you please elaborate on the TRU/EB deal?

Second, I would personally recommend waiting. Sony is infamous for having shotty first gen hardware. There were defects with the first gen PS1s, there were defects with the first gen PS2s, so I'm willing to bet there will be defects on first gen PSPs(other than what's already been listed i.e. dead pixels, sticky square button, etc.)

Right now the PSP is at a premium price because its so new. Also, the game selection is somewhat lacking IMO. The PSP is a very sexy device and when you first play games on it, I'm sure you'll think its great. But, after that initial hype wears off, I'll bet you find that its maybe not as great as you anticipated since most of the games are simply downgraded console ports.

I, personally, would recommend waiting for the price to go down, make sure all the kinks are worked out in the hardware, and wait for some killer apps to come out.

TRU had old garbage games for 90% off making some games $1.00. EB had a trade in any 2 non-sports games and get an extra $10 in credit at the same time...last month. So I traded in a bunch of games that I bought cheap and made money on each transaction. Then I took the good games from the TRU sale and sold them on Ebay to cover the cost of my intial TRU purchases. = Free PSP w\ Game.

Not one second thought at all. You have been going back and forth with this for awhile. Might be better off just saving the credit untill you find something you really want.

A bigger question is why you would want multiple GameCubes or PS2s. Are you that intent on LAN parties? Do you already have one of each?

For myself, the PSP is the only hardware of note I don't already own. The only other thing I'd be doing with the credit is buying games for the GBA and DS (since I cannot currently use anything else) or cashing out to pay bills. So long as I think of it as $125 for a PSP and several games/accessories I have no problems. If I'd had to pay anything like full price there is no way I'd bother untila price drop and good availability of used games.

I own a Gamecube and a PS2. I might pick up another gamecube at some point to store away but I was merely stating at how much I could get for my $300.

As far as grabbing new games to play it isn't worth it to me as I never pay $50 for a new game. I ususally wait until they are much cheaper. It doesn't bother me as I have enough backlog to keep me occupied.

I am most likely going to get the PSP as my pre-order is already paid in full and I didn't pay a red cent for it. I am just wondering if anyone else was thinking about what their $300 could get them as opposed to a PSP.

You can give miyamoto more money for gaming rehashes =).

I recommend you just go through with your preorder and ebay it =p

And all of PSP titles are NOT rehashed? C'mon. There's a handful of actual original games on it. However, thats still not keeping me from buying it.

I hesitantly bought an Xbox years ago about a couple months after launch (when it had no games) and I really regretted it. I ended up selling it at a loss. Then again, I also bought a Saturn hastily (when they were $80 at EB) and really enjoyed my time with it. If I were you, i'd hold off as it's not going anywhere, but only time will tell if you made a good decision or not.

I think by saying that you are getting it for free, you are answering your own question. I too exploited the TRU/EB deal to get my PSP for about $65.
I had preordered one at EB right when they first started taking POs, but cancelled it when the steep launch price was announced. There is just no way I would spend that much out-of-pocket for a PSP, but I got a new preorder when I got in on the TRU deal. I couldn't justify buying one if i was paying full-price; but since it's cheap for me (or FREE for you!), it seems worth it.

I'd say go for it since its pretty much free. I dont think there is a better thing to get with the credit, plus, as noted earlier, if you dont like it, ebay it!

I'm going to get one but not for a while since I just got a DS and I'm going to Japan where I want to spend 300 on something more practical (tech wise :).)

i also have the concern about launch hardware, i pre-ordered mine at GR with credit and they don't offer an extended warranty so i may just eBay it, i'd also like to see the reviews of the launch games and maybe even play a little bit in the store before i crack the seal

In 6-8 months the Next Xbox will be rolling out at that price if by any chance at all you might pick that up sit on the credit. Let the first gen PSP go and wait for a price drop..

ignorance is bliss, as they say.
I have 2 PSPs preordered and 10 games all paid off and I dont regret it. I didnt use a trade in deal either. I definately say go for it.
Yikes. Can I borrow your winning lottery ticket?

ON TOPIC: To the original poster, I would say hold off on it. You can keep the store credit on the account and have the benefit of learning from other early adopters. If people end up loving it and you love it after trying, then go ahead and buy, the credit will still be there. But if you just make the purchase without trying or learning from others' impressions, there's always the chance you won't like it and will regret using the credit when the next gen systems come around and you wish you had that credit.

Personally im going to wait for a price drop. I have too much to play right now anyway to buy a new system. Besides, my fiancee would shoot me if I dropped that much money on anything right now.

If the new xbox is out this year it would suck not to have the cash for it. If I were you I would wait for E3.

I'm a patient guy, so I have no problem waiting until the "value pack" dissapears and the psp drops in price, and maybe even for the first revision which may fix any hardware launch issues. And I have plenty of games to tide me over until the few months before these changes happen.

Wait, does jkam even own an Xbox? I don't think he does, but I might be wrong. If you are having second thoughts about buying a PSP, buy an Xbox. It's already a proven system with a huge library of games. It should be seeing a price drop in the next month or two also.

I only have a PS2 and a Cube. There isn't really any games that are drawing me to buy an XBOX. Therefore I'm most likely not going to be getting an XBOX 2 either.

Right now the cube is my favorite system...mainly because with the GB player I can play a wide range of games...everything from 8-bit until the current generation. If Starfox (SNES) and Starfox 64 (N64) were playable on the Cube I would probably get rid of my SNES and N64 as well.

I think I am going to go ahead and get the PSP...it will be nice to have to play at work along with my DS (YES THEY CAN PLAY NICELY TOGETHER!). I'm sure once I get it in my hands I'll probably think to myself why was I doubting this?

I had a period where I rethought my PSP over and over, but then someone showed me their imported PSP, and I really wanted one again.

It does feel like a tremendous investment though... $250 + 20 tax, 25 warranty + 44 for Lumines (after tax), and then the $150 for the memory stick is like $500. Its going to hurt.

$300 could buy me a new 27-inch flatscreen TV for my bedroom, a new progressive scan DVD player, and all of the essential cable hookups for my XBox and Cube. PSP just isn't worth it for me.

Who says he's gotta buy a 2gb stick right now? he could get a 512mb for 60 or just use the one that came with the system for saves and do video stuff later.

I'm in the same boat.

I'm going overseas for 3 years, and want to have a Region 1 PSP, without having to have my family send me one.

I preordered mine, and it's paid for,... but it IS a lot of money for something I will most likely never use.

The thought of missing out on great titles, and the added functionality isn't helping to sway me either.

I wish I could've unloaded my stuff faster, so the residual cashflow from the TRU and CC sales could've eased my financial dilemma.

I may end up selling it on eBay, or to someone in Japan, who couldn't get one.

As for the system wars,........ I am still an avid GC collector,... and I love the system more than pie,... but I have to regret not getting an XBox sooner.
That beast has become my 6th appendage.

There are SO many amazing games on the XBox now, and LIVE makes it the all around champ in my books. If the Cube had had at least 25% of it's developers implement online features, it'd most definitely win console of this gen.
Now,... I have to give M$ my applaud.

Let us know what you do JKAM.
:)

lol, i've been having second thoughts too. if i were u, i'd wait. like everyone else said, its not going anywhere and by the time the price drops, there will probably be a larger library of games . what have u got to lose? (besides some time...)

then again, i'm gonna be a complete hypocrite. i work at a game store so its hard not to get caught up in all the hype. so despite the 70+ games i haven't touched yet and my lousy pay, i'm getting a psp. who cares if i end up a few hundred short on tuition? uc berkeley, blah, crappy school anyway, they dont deserve my money...right...yeah...that's it.

wait. dont be a seccond me :p

I gave in to the darkside. It was too strong to resist, so I am getting the PSP at launch along with 5 games (Lumies, Metal Gear, Wipeout, Untold Legends, Darkstalkers). I think its worth the 250 price tag, if you can play music, videos and view pictures along with the gaming. Only downside is the memory sticks are expensive.

Hey, what's a few hundred extra overtime hours for a College student?

Waiting for some people is very highly dependant on whether you can resist the feeling thet you're missing out on something. If you can totally ignore the boxes on the store shelves and people around you randomly talking about the system and/or it;s games, it's perfectly fine for you to wait. But if you find yourself thinking "Hey, this might be pretty darn cool to have" and you have thoughts about what you'll do first with it you have your answer already.

This is downside of the TRU/EB deal: after getting so much credit at EB, there isn't much to spend it on. I'm gonna go with the PSP, if only for the thrill of being an early adopter. But with hardware, I think you can return it even if it's opened, in case you have second thoughts. Or you could always eBay it and make even more money (if there's a hardware shortage).
Nope, no second thoughts at all. Lumines is easily worth $300.
That better be one damn good puzzler. When I can get a PSP + Lumines for $180 or so, then I'll jump aboard. Right now, for first gen Sony hardware, it isn't worth it.

I had second thoughts too, until I realized that I didn't play 3/4 of my games. Another trip to Gamerush and my PSP is paid in full :D.

This is the exact same situation as me. Only for me it was EB and the 2 for extra $10 deal they were running.

Such a good point.... So hard not to give in but Im a try. hehe.

I'm in the same boat, OP. I'll probably pick it up and leave it unopened for a few weeks, checking the eBay prices. If they are pretty high, I'll sell, if not much more, keep it. I can wait.

I bought the DS at launch and am quite disappointed. Hard to wait for the "good" titles that are coming out.

I too, loved my GC as the system of choice, but for the past 2-3 months, I have been playing nothing but Xbox (Otogi 1&2, Kotor 1&2, Repub. Commando, BIA, Fable, Armed and Dangerous, Magic:Battlegrounds). I have little desire for the Xbox 2 right now, as I'm just getting into my Xbox.

I am having big time second thoughts also, I have used alot of my own games to trade in plus some of the TRU games to build up credit. And I have just started to take advantage of the 3 for 1 deal that EB is offering on first party PSP titles to have 6 of those games paid off.

I have a chance to use the 3 for 1 at EB to reserve 7 more 1st party Sony because I can pickup 21 PO games not on the POX list for around $100.00 from a friend who wants to sell some gaming stuff he is done with. And then using the 3 for 1 deal make that $100.00 turn into about $280.00 in store credit for PSP launch games I would rather have, though switching around pre-orders and returning some of those 1st party titles.

But I dont know if I want to even go through the effort of trying to deal with the trading in a switching around process. It just does not seem worth it to me for some reason, to run around for games on a system I am so on the fence about.

I started to have second thoughts early on, until I played me neighbor's DS and realized it was just the same old boring gameboy. i watched the 2 and a half minute wipeout pure video on IGN and almost wet myself: the graphics are that good. I'm gettin a PSP and Wipeout Pure at launch from EB, and thanks to my 15th birthday on the 11th, I only have to pay $125 out of my pocket, which is pretty much my leftover christmas money plus my b-day money.

Eh, if you're having second thoughts, then just wait awhile. You have to remember that the graphics will only have that "wow-factor" for a short while after you buy it. There are new games that are coming out for the current generation of consoles that look great, but how often do you look at your xbox game and say "wow, these are great graphics!" And yeah, they are, but we've all gotten used to them.

Well good 3D graphics are finally making their way to the handheld arena, and everybody is wetting themselves over them. That'll be the norm for a few months, and then when everybody gets used to the graphics and the general newness of the PSP, the importance of gameplay will start to reemerge.

When you get a new console (handheld or otherwise), that's all you'll play for a good while. But after you've seen all that it can do, you'll fall back into your normal gaming habits. If you're anything like me, you'll gravitate towards playing good games, regardless of the system they're on. If you see a bunch of games that interest you for the PSP (completely disregarding graphics), then go ahead. But if the only thing pushing you towards the PSP is the flashy graphics and sexy design, then wait on it.

Graphics get outdated, and quickly. Good gameplay does not.

Originally i was going to hold off, but caved in. I had a ton of Xbox/GC games i never play so i sold them on ebay and paid for the PSP and 3 games in full at GS. Then i traded in a bunch of games in the $10 each deal to pay for two games at EB. Stil have a bunch of cash left over which ill use for the memory sick. So in the end its money i just had lying around in other stuff i never use

If you're not sure yet, give it time.

The DS and PSP have yet to prove themselves. It took a while for the GBA to get off the ground and for its more amazing titles to start appearing, just as it's taken almost every console to date time to shine.

In a year from now, the PSP could have dropped to N-Gage level failure...but so could the DS. Give it time, and see what titles appear for them. That's all we can do at this point.

I waited to get a GBA until Mario Kart came out. Ironically, it's the only GBA game i've sold since the purchase.

I'd have second thoughts too if Spider-man 2 was the only game I was getting with my PSP. There's like ten games out that are way better than that.
