PSP troubleshooting

Specter Fate

CAGiversary!
If this isn't allowed I apologize, but I don't think this goes against the "no custom firmware" thing. Anyway..

I have a PSP-1001 or a Fat model. I use it as an MP3 player as well as for games. However recently when I connect it to USB odd files pop up on the stick (none of this MP_root stuff)

Now I was stupid and decided to try and hard format it, and got a pretty red screen CRITICAL SYSTEM ERROR message. Long story short it's bricked. My question is,

Does this sound like the memory card reader is dead? The card and its real files pop up normally when plugged into my Sony HandyCam but would not when in the PSP.

Also, and this is what is probably taboo-- I'll edit this out immediately if it is and I apologize in advance-- from what I've read online about jigkicking it back from being bricked (this whole "pandora" concept), does this mean there is no way for me to get it fixed other than paying Sony 90$? And is there anywhere other than Sony I can get it repaired? I'd rather not pay 90$ for a repair when I can get a new (used) 1001 from GameStop for 10$ more.

Thanks in advance for you guys' help. If you need more details or anything let me know.

I'm not even sure what you did but anything relating to the memory card should be fine unless you tried to format the memory card in the PSP from the computer you were using, that can make very bad things happen apparently. Either way if you bricked your PSP you'll need to have it put into service mode and recovered. If you can get your hands on a service battery, you can unbrick it yourself with any of the tutorials available in those unlinkable places. Worst case scenario, find somebody on Craigslist to do it for you for $25 or so.

That's what I did - through the computer, because doing it through the system was not working. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to have a glitch or something that when it's on USB the flash memory pops up instead of the card, which is why I'd get the system error for the format.

I have the service battery but it doesn't want to go into recovery mode, so do I need to keep the battery on the charger for it to get juice or just get a new battery?

I'd say follow a tutorial, you're going to need a memory card, the battery and access to a computer that can read the card. It's entirely possible your OS got corrupted and the USB was reading the flash section instead of the card. Just google up unbricking a psp or check out youtube for some vids, there's plenty up there. The battery doesn't just throw you into service mode, you need to follow the tutorial to finish the process.

Used the tutorial, nothing happened. Quick google search has led me to believe that either the service battery is dead or the card reader is broken. Should I just send it back to Sony for the 90$?

Ah ha, deleted my other post since I didn't want to edit and update like crazy. I found what you're looking for.

Buy.com has just the memory card reader for like 8 and change after shipping but apparently the reader is attached to the wifi board so it'd be the easier of the two options to do.

Edit: As for the service battery, you have to turn the PSP on while holding R usually. If it just green lights and nothing else happens, reader is more than likely dead since it's trying to load from the stick. If there are no lights on the PSP power side, then battery is dead.

I personally think the PSP itself is bricked. I honestly have not heard many issues with the memory stick reader.

You could try another PSP 1000 battery in case there's a problem with it. I currently have three PSPs (1000, 2000, and Go) and never had memory stick reader issues.

Even a bricked PS3 will load the OS from a memory stick in service mode, if he isn't able to, then there is something wrong with the reader or the memory stick, since he can read the stick in other devices, that leaves the reader if his battery is charged. Process of elimination and all that.
