How do you check a dlc code to make sure it is valid without redeeming it?

I don't think you can.
But if you have already redeemed a DLC code for the same content, when you redeem the code it will tell you that you already own it, but only if it HASN'T yet been redeemed. Otherwise, it will say the code has already been used.

this, but make sure you do it on your 360, and not through xbox.com
