So I have my old 3DS XL.  I am sitting here waiting for my new 3DS XL to be delivered (next hour or so).  I have a 32 GB SD card in my old system and have already bought a 32 GB microSD for the new system.

The internet is filled with confusing processes and I just want first hand experience or opinions.

When I get my new 3DS should I immediately put the new microSD card in the new system?

I don't have much on my old 3DS and don't want to mess with PC based transfer options.

So my thought was:

1) Open new 3DS and put 32 GB microSD in new system

2) Boot new system and partial set up (without NNID) and update system before transfer

3) Get old system ready and follow steps for wireless system to system transfer

4) Wait for transfer to complete

5) Be done and be good to go...

Thoughts?

I just have found no definitive data about putting the new microSD in the new 3DS before I even boot it up.....

I was in the same boat you are in. This is what I did and it worked out fine!

I opened up my Majora's Mask N3DSXL. Opened up the back. Put in my new 32GB mini SD card. Booted it up and updated the system. Made sure it was charged! I Didn't log into a network ID or anything. I literally just booted it up and let it sit there.

Turned on my old red 3DS XL. Went into the settings and started to go through the process of the system transfer. Put the systems like 2 ft apart and went through the process. Took a good hour or so because I had a lot of stuff.

Went without any issues. The old one wipes clean and reformats after the transfer is done. The new Majora's mask automatically was signed into my network ID and had all my games on it. Didn't have to redownload anything!

Yup. I didn't see your post before I did the transfer but I went through with it and it worked flawlessly. Also just did the wireless transfer. Everyone complains about how long it takes, and I won't say it was quick, but it worked and it didn't take FOREVER. I had other things to do so by the time it was done all was well.

Excited to actually play on it now!!!

Happy Gaming fellow Majoras Mask Edition Cag!!! :D

For anyone wondering I did a MH System Transfer last night and here is what I did successfully.

Do this anytime, I recommend before your new 3DS comes in to save time.

1. Transfer your old 3DS memory card to your PC. Leave everything on the card, just copy it to your PC.

When your 3DS comes in. If you are using a card bigger than 4GB.

2. Take out the micro sd on the new 3DS. Copy that to your PC since it has the copy of MH

3. Copy that data to your blank new micro SD card you got. (The data you just copied off the 4GB with MH)

4. Insert that into the New 3DS.

5. Run the system transfer.

6. Run through the prompts.

7. Select PC Transfer

8. Once your prompted, copy the data from the old 3DS card to your new micro SD card.

Your finished.
