Questions about hooking up a 5.1 Receiver.

Dezzy

CAGiversary!
I have an HDTV with an Optical Out port. Oh, I shoulda mentioned, the tv is the Olevia t242 that Target used to sell.

Digital Cable box plugged in via component cables.
PS3 and Xbox 360 both plugged in via HDMI.

Will getting a 5.1 Receiver and using the Optical Out on the TV allow the cable and both game consoles to take advantage of the 5.1?(this is how I want it!)

Or does everything need to be plugged into the receiver directly?(won't really work for 2 game consoles with HDMI..)

For about $20 you can get an optical selector and 3 optical cables from either Meritline or Monoprice. That way you can go HDMI to the TV and optical to the receiver without sending it through the TV.

It depends on what Floods said...but honestly, if you're getting a new 5.1 receiver, it should be the 'command center' of your setup. If it has HDMI switching, then you should just run the cable box and systems and everything through the Receiver, then have one, single, HDMI cable going to the TV.

I don't understand why having 2 game consoles with HDMI would not work, unless you already bought the receiver and it has only 1 or no HDMI...

I know the audiophiles will crucify me for recommending a receiver other than Onkyo or Denon, but see if you can grab the Sony STR-DG720 for ~$200. They had it on amazon for $219 in early January and it has been more than useful for me and I think you'll have enough HDMI ports to do what you need to do.

Crucifiction seems a bit drawn out...I'd rather coat you in gravy and lock you in a cage with a wild tiger.

I personally would recommend a lower range Denon or Pioneer, or even a Yamaha. I'll check out that Sony, though I haven't seen a Sony receiver in almost 20 years that I'd touch.
