I am looking to buy one of the 2, but my I have a couple of questions. 1.) Can you seriously make a character from scratch? 2.) Roughly how long does it take to make a smooth running custom game? 3.) Is it hard as shit to make your lands and characters. 4.) Do you need a keyboard? and finnally 5.) Will this game(s) eat up my time, or is it a waste of my time? Thanks.

I can speak for the first one, as I owned it less than a year ago. I never really played because in order to make a game, you have to put in an INSANE amount of time. Yes, you can make a character from scratch, but expect to spend a few hours making it. Plus, I can't remember for sure but I think that you can only put in a limited number of your own created graphics.

To give you short answers...
1-Yes
2-I'd say about 80-100 hours minimum for a decent game that's not very long
3-Land no, characters depends on whether you want to draw them yourself
4-Don't think you can use a keyboard on the first one, though it would help immensely
5-For the first game, it depends...do you want to spend 100+ hours to make an early SNES-era RPG?

I totally agree with psyclerk, when I bought RPG maker 1 I was all happy and gitty, yay my own RPG, and after about 20 hours of work I wasnt even close to having a full RPG, its not worth the effort.

Keyboard is a necessity. DO NOT play this game without it.

Either get the PC version or the second one (which I havn't experienced), as I do not believe the first one has keyboard support.

I wanted the RPG Maker games, because supposedly people were going to make their own home made RPGs on it and post them on the net to download, so people could share their RPGs.

So far, I have hardly see anyone put up anything about their home made games...that should have been a clue that something was wrong with the game. And if I couldn't make an RPG of my own without putting in a hundred hours or more, using a game that is supposed to make it fun and easy but DOESNT, is a no sale in my book.

Guys the rpg is supposed to take along time to make. That way when you are done your rpg will actually be halfway decent and also so you can really feel a sense of acheivement.

Yes, it's supposed to take a long time to make. But this 'game' offers diminishing returns. Maybe if you had three or four friends who all worked on specific aspects of the game, you could do something. As it is, it takes one person too long to get anything done.

I had the first one but got rid of it last year to get Romance of the three kingdoms 8. It was just way too frustrating for me to deal with as something along the lines of creating characters was far too limited and the basics of the game take a long time to learn and can easily be forgotten.

I'm probably gonna get in trouble for saying this but I only really enjoyed the game when I downloaded other people's rpgs and customized their games to whatever I wanted.

I bought part 2 last week at Best Buy but never got around to opening it.
