Rare videogames?

outlawz42

CAGiversary!
I have played video games since the wonderful day my cousin gave me a hand me down of his Pong machine and when I was done with that then came the atari 2600. I have collected comic books and baseball card since almost as long..now I hear about rare/limited edition video games? I'm looking at peoples trade lists and I see people asking for old nes games, tg-16 etc....and not wanting to trade for a quote on quote "good game" because their game is "rare" ? I myself was going to offer up suikoden II in a trade until I did a quick search on EBAY for it and I saw its going for 100 plus...What other ones are out there? This intrigues me and I would love to know more...

before someone else yells at you...there are about a million of "what games are rare" threads on here....just do a quick search, and hopefully that feature will spew more results to you then it has with my experiences...good luck

Actually now that I have researched somewhat...its a lot of thread bashing and lack of wit and no answers as to what is rare...and why bother to collect it? I was actually looking for some help on to keep or sell suikoden II and see what else is rare...
If you read alot of cag post and topics, you begin to notice what's rare and what isnt. other then that just check ebay.
Like I said when it comes to baseball cards or comics..I know what "rare" really is..but I mean when it comes to video games..If I were to just read the forums..I would think every game except "Primal" is rare..

I suggest you need to become a regular here. I've only been here for 3 months and i know that my RE3(gc) is worth like 90 dollars and my bust a groove(playstation) is worth about 50 bucks. just read and learn.

See this is what I am looking for...answers! No questions, no answers! I don't need a detailed list or anything..just a basic idea of what to look out for, you know? I've been here less then a month but i've learned a few things..

not to be mean, but its kinda as if ur bragging..alot of ppl here know that suikoden 2 is really rare..and yet ppl always love 2 subtly drop it in like "I was actually looking for some help on to keep or sell suikoden II and see what else is rare... "

i mean..we cant tell u what 2 do with wat u have ..if u like the game, keep it, if u need a quick buck, sell it..thats my advice...

o yea, so i dont go off topic..hehe, suikoden 2 is really rare, last i checked, goes for around $200 i believe? correct me if im wrong pls :)
I'm rare. There is only 1 of me. Start the bidding...
But since you've already been opened in ten years you won't be worth anything.

I could see how you could make that mistake..I am seriously just looking to obtain some knowledge. We could all use more $ but I am not in desperate means to obtain some by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure there are better and more rare games then the one I simply managed to hold on to just because I really loved the game, Which I still do. Also like I said, I am still new to the whole "cheap ass gamer" thing..Now I feel spoiled when I have to pay full price for a game.

It's true that this question is asked too often. However it's also true that people around here have become too prickly about it. We all started out knowing nothing about rare games.

Another fact: search eBay auctions, particularly completed, to see how much any title is worth. Then again, there are titles that aren't actually rare, but have high value due to demand outstripping supply.

Also, eBay is useless for a game that is so rare that there are no auctions. Yes, this does happen, though more often for games that run from $60-150 rather than games above that amount (despite or maybe because of its insane value, there are ALWAYS people selling Panzer Dragoon Saga and other Saturn titles). This is naturally because even the most diehard of collectors will cave in to get that extra cash if a game is worth that much, maybe even to buy another one.

Half.com is less reliable, basically that's a yes/no prospect for "Is it rare?" and not so much truthful monentary value.

As mentioned, Digitpress is a site that lists rae games, but its Table of Contents, navigation and search engine were so awful I found it generally unusable. Maybe I'll figure it out someday.
http://www.digitpress.com/lists.htm

Edit: Ebay should NEVER be used as an accurate guide for determining how rare/valuable a game is.
Ebay is the best way to determine how much to sell or buy a game for, Culdcept for instance had a small printing but lack of demand dropped the price below $10 at GS.

Rare with videogames changes often. The best way to determine rare is to look up ebay prices. Shadow Hearts was $20 until Covenant came out, Metal Gear Solid Substance PS2 wasn't worth much until demand increased due to MGS3. Other games like the Arc the Lad collection decreased in value due to the TRU sale.

But if you've got Suikoden 2 now would be a good time to sell it due to the release of 4.

Exactly..ebay is not a good gauge because as he said, if people want it doesn't matter how much it is..they will buy it. I appreciate the help Severe, all I want is to be informed.

Yes because only a million were made so if you don't open them for ten years you'll be rich.

I'm not looking to become rich, I simply enjoy collecting...

uhh ebay isn't a very good place to judge the rarity of games. It doesn't necessarily have to be rare to be over-priced. Alot of the time the pricey games on ebay are just in high demand or "buzz" games that are sought after because of word of mouth alone.

Yes but there are plenty of rare games that are worth $5, I'd much rather have a nonrare game worth $50 than a rare culdcept right now.

Yes. but if you are collecting to impress people well it isn't the highlight of your collection right now.

there is a difference between rare and game that sells for a lot on ebay. For example NCAA College Basketball 2K3 is very rare base on the number of copies shipped, but it wont cost more than $60 on ebay.

I found a sealed Dragon Warrior for NES! Can I be rich now??!! Please?

I find it funny that Gamestop sells NCAA College Basketball 2K3 for $8 for PS2 and Xbox, yet jumps to $30 on GC (because its suppose to be rare). In other words, dont these companies make money off of the overpaying moron on Ebay? Another thing, before Dragon Ball Final bout was rereleased, Gamestop had it at $150. I find that part of the whole rare/valuable game problem.

What about that game that was for PS1? It resembles Dragonball Z type fighting (no, not the games, the anime).

It's 2player fighting, free roaming, when you are far away, your buttons make you shoot ki and energy balls. When you get close, those very same buttons make you punch, kick, grab, instead,

I don't remember the name, and it was pretty fun, though the graphics (it was 3-D polygon characters/environments) weren't even on par with Street fighter pixels. That one might be rare now....just guessing.

Destrega or Psychic Force. Niether games are worth that much

See outlaz43, the big issue is that most people can't wrap thier heads around the idea that videogame prices are dictated by both rarity and demand... with demand being responsible for the lion's share of the value.

There are plenty of rare games that aren't worth much at all, and quite a few games that could never actually be called rare that will book decent values.

Ebay is a good way of judging demand, along with other retailers...
Digitpress is great for figuring actual rarity.

While I have no doubt that you could grasp these relatively simple concepts, there have been many, many people who asked the same question before you and could not. Considering that this question has come up almost weekly, and at times daily, it's easy for some people to become jaded, and for the question to be treated as extremely trivial and almost a joke.

Sure, it's not right, but that's the way it is.

I'm not too worried about the ones who are typing nonsense..sometimes its amusing usually it not though :( But I'm just learning you know?

Yes Suikoden 2 is rare, but it is also one of the best games ever. I remeber when I first bought it at Target on sale a few weeks after its release because no one wanted it. Now people are willing to pay a hefty buck to let it sit on their shelf and never experience how great the game is (even better if you completed Suikoden 1 and found everything).

A quick fact for rare game hunters is that you should check pawnshops. I've grabbed rare games for $5-$10 complete like they were bought yesterday. I recently purchased a Final Fantasy ( No box or instructions NES) for $2 and a Disgaea ($10). One in town has a Suikoden 2 but its currently $25 (they move the price down every two weeks).

What if its a girl and shes a virign, unopened, GAH thats evil.
I'm rare. There is only 1 of me. Start the bidding...
There's not enough money out there for you, gmzone.

From that Suikoden auction...

"This game is worth every penny you can throw at it."

350 bucks is alot of pennies... I'd hate to say this, but I don't consider any game worth that much (outside of arcade machines and pinball, of course). I mean, I have Panzer Saga, and I sure as hell didn't pay that much for it. I'd like to see games like Suiko 2 played more and collected less, but that's just me.
