In the recent years there's been a slew of useless limited editions (Splinter cell double agent limited edition anyone?)

Recently I've noticed Killzone 2 isn't even getting a LE, but Halo Wars is.
Either way.... do you guys think that this will finally be the death of the useless LE or will companies desperately grasp to the hope of making an extra $20 per box w/ useless plastic stuff from China?

Occasionally I don't mind the CEs/LEs that have come out for games I've bought and enjoyed. Still, most of the time i just don't pay any attention to them anyhow and/or don't buy them.

I see nothing wrong with any company offering a LE/CE. People aren't obligated to purchase LE/CE versions. It's nice to have a choice. :applause:

I think publishers might start making less of them so they won't be sitting on store shelves for as long as most do now. Ironically, this will also boost demand for them.

More likely to be phased out altogether as I'm sure it costs more (per unit) to make 10,000 trinkets versus 100,000 and cuts into the profitability. As soon as they see return on investment shrink, they will cut it out altogether. (Just my simple business logic at work)

I am totally surprised by the fact that killzone 2 didn't even have one but I think it was because of the fact that they had so much pressure because of the phony hype. They just have ot release it to move on. I predict that it will be mediocre and a flop.

I like the fact that they make them however I would rather it come with stuff that is worth it. Like the SFIV CE. The anime and download are worth it to me. I don't really like the making of videos or music cds however if it is more content for the game that you only get in the CE/LE or a movie then I will get them. However now I'm geting to the point that it has to be a game that I really like the series or the CE has to seem worth it to me. I'm a fan of the Resident Evil games but the CE for 5 just does not seem worth it to me. I don't see them going away or going down in price. As long as people are buying them they will make them and sell them. I do see them maybe getting to be better then just the crap that usually comes in them.

Doubtful. These LE's/CE's more than likely cost pennies on the dollar to make. If they can sell a few of them and make a huge profit, then why cut back on that?

This.

I bet they make a nice extra bit of money on them, most of the content is crap and probably very cheap to make.

Very true.

The extra "content" in these pathetic LE/CE's costs virtually nothing.

Hell, I bet in most cases the content was originally planned for the regular version but then some brilliant guy from the marketing department decided that they could pull this content from the regular version and charge more for the LE/CE version with everything included.

In the end, I bet basic productions of the regular vs LE/CE are within pennies of one another.

I stopped buying LE's they day the guy at Gamestop ripped me off Whe I pre-ordered Assasins Creed I was told that it would come with a 12 inch collectors figure, When I got the game It was that little 2-ince POS and it was broken. I took it back to GS to see if they would replace it but they said "Sorry the game was sealed so we're not responsible for whats in the box"

Gamestop at it's finest. :applause:

I just hope Atlus continues to bundle soundtracks and artbooks with their games. Makes sense for them-- the bonuses can't be too expensive to produce, they're actually interesting, and it probably helps generate interest in games like Eternal Poison that otherwise might not attract as much attention. What I'd personally like to see less of is useless dinky crap like plush dolls and calendars.

I dont really care about all the art books and lithographs! (OMG GASP!) but I do enjoy a behind the scences documentary (ex MGS4).

You know what I love and would pay $10 more for? The metal game case. Seriously I fucking love the metal cases.

God Of War II is still the only game I've ever seen that actually included a separate DVD of extra content without charging as a limited edition version.

I'm still upset about the fact that the Star Wars DVD re-re-re-release with extra disc including the untouched theatrical version was stated on the package as "limited time only". I was told it would only be available until February 2007. I can still buy it at Wal-Mart today.

God I can't fucking stand it when someone talks out of their ass. Take a look at reviews before you call a game mediocre. It's currently sitting on a 92 on at metacritic and has been in the top ten at Amazon for a while. Please research shit before you make useless posts again.

I think that we need to go back in time. Every game should have a soundtrack mode. (and maybe an artwork viewer like in SC2 or 1) Or maybe include the mode in a LE version, and make the MP3(s) available from the disc as well.

Doom 3 Limited edition was only $5 more and it had a playable version of Doom 1 and 2. To me, that was worth it.

I agree. I find it odd more games don't do this with the Virtual Console, PSN, and XBLA. Buy the LE of this game, and get a free download of this game online!

Ugh I had the double agent shitty edition. Thanks for reminding me ;(

I was gonna buy the Mortal Kombat limited edition, but after reading the DVD comes in a plastic sleeve I may not grab it. Plus the extras are overall "meh".

I got in on the Saints Row 2 CE, and for $35 It's a steal for all the extras it comes with and the shiney case.

Both Volition and Capcom have done things right by including a actual DVD case inside the collectors edition so you can set aside the collectors items and keep them intact while the actual game and case can be put elsewhere.

Lost Planet CE was pretty "meh" with the slip cover. Though it atleast had two holders for both the game and extras.

Overall games that are the LE are still widely produced and should be renamed to CE if they are going to make mass quantites. Let the hoarders and collectors alike know whats going to be heavily produced and what isn't.

But hey, if it makes the company money and people keep buying them - whose to stop them?

Not to go too off topic, but a super hyped game getting high reviews and selling tons is pretty much par for the course, and in no way indicative of it's quality. I was terribly underwhelmed by the demo. I don't understand why everyone got so excited for this.

For all the crap it got one of the better limited editions in my book was the Halo Helmet. While it should have been you know LIMITED instead of filling some landfill somewhere now it just is what I would really expect for the extra money, an all out effort. I stopped buying L.E games a long time ago because making of documentaries or a theme don't cut it by themselves.

Really what I hope dies a quick death is releasing paid DLC less then a month after a game is released.

god of war 2 is one of the few full price buys i never regretted awesome game. and yeah i hope these lame ass limited/collector editions do die off. very few of them are worth it and in the end they drop in price. look at that halo 3 helmet bundle. you can get it for 30 bucks or so now when it was going for a shit load more than that at release.

thats the same shit that makes me not buy dvds. rereleasing things over and over is annoying and only cheapens what a person buys. just do it once and do it right. granted i can understand when they do box sets after a series is done thats cool but i always pity the idiots who have to have everything. you cant take it with you afterall and even if you could why would you ou want all that stuff cluttering up your cloud or melting away in your pit?

lmao at the guy "guessing" at the quality of a game that has had dozens on reviews posted for like two weeks and then other people getting upset about it.

One thing I like about the limited editions is the used price is almost always the same price as the non-CE version. So it lets me get more bang for the buck when I buy used.

I just like the tins and when you can buy them at gamestop used about 6 months to a year for the same price as the regular version of the game.

Seriously. Idk why, I just get a hard on for steelbooks.

Honestly LE/CEs are only worth buying if they;

a) feature steelbook packaging

and / or

b) feature some really cool bonus, such as additional games / movies.

Same with me man. Hell if I can afford it, why not? I don't know why people bitch about CEs and LEs. If you don't like them, don't buy them.

People complain because, in some cases, what's included in a LE or CE is what used to simply be included in the regular game. I don't think too many people mind there being a $150 version of Halo 3 for those willing to pay for it, as long as there is a $60 for the rest.

Hell yea. Back in the day almost every game had something like this, and if not it was like a hidden thing you needed to look up, but it was added at no additional cost.
Stuff like artwork, extra modes, alternate costumes or w/e were all available in games before DLC showed up and then companies started to nickle and dime everyone for shit we used to just have to unlock on our own or was hidden as a perk.

Now it's all about unlock codes >.>

I'm with the steelbook thing though, I love em! Usually I'm with an LE/CE if it includes something that I could possibly use or would look nice visually. I LOATHE behind the scenes bonus dvd's though, but that's just me.

For example:

GTA4 had a lockbox and duffel bag, that was cool.

Resistance 2 had an awesome Chimera figure that was actually packaged like a figure and fairly big.

SF4 had a movie, although I was not surprised but dissapointed with the figure and its packaging.

RE5 has me sold with the stuff it's including, especially the steelbook packaging

In other news, Batman: Arkham Asylum CE announced..

//edit: Well, not officially, but a CE has popped up in our computers at work.

I love limited editions, especially because stores get stuck with them and you can usually get it for cheaper than the regular version. Like GTA 4 SE, sells for $59.99 at Target (I know it is overpriced) but the LE was $44.98.

All really depends on what comes with it.

Small Book and BTS videos = NO

T-shirt, Soundtrack, In-game items, Special items like necklace, medallion, Metal Tin = YES
