Red Steel split-screen multiplayer: "the fight will not be only on screen"

An intriguing Red Steel multiplayer detail recently surfaced during GamePro's interview with Ubisoft creative director Nicolas Eypert. When asked about the game's multiplayer, Eypert had this to say:

"[You'll] have up to four players. If they play together in split screens we can only say that the fight will not be only on screen."

While the 4-player figure is underwhelming by today's standards, we're certainly curious about the off-screen activity Eypert has hinted at. Cross-room shootouts? Mock swordfights? Could be groundbreaking ... could be awful -- it will most certainly be embarrassing.

Can Ubisoft resuscitate the current state of 'couch' co-op?

I have no idea what they they are planing, hopefully it works well

4 players? Off Screen? That's pretty freakin sweet.

But if they're going to have 4 players, You know Nintendo has to give the option of playing this game Via Link Cable(Aka Time Crisis 3) so it can be a possibility to have your own screen when playing. Having only a 4th of your screen to shoot at sucks mucho balls.

Did Goldeneye suck mucho balls?

Did Perfect Dark?

Did every multiplayer shooter before them?

This is one of my biggest gripes with the 360, if not the biggest - They cut out split-screen multiplayer completely. It's gone from a bunch of friends sitting in a basement, each focused on their own segment of the TV, and having a fun time, to yelling at your faceless companion over a headset, with no actual personal connection. I'd rather have a 4th of my screen than 35 other people I don't know shouting at me.

If I recall correctly, Goldeneye and PD didn't require you to point something at a screen and shoot.

But I guess all my friends and I could've missed out somehow?

... it isn't a light gun. You move the remote until your gun on-screen points where you want it to, just like you would move the analog stick on your 360 controller until the gun points where you want it to.

Yeah, and there's a big difference between 4 people trying to point something at a TV while standing in a room, instead of sitting down with your own designated region you can't go out of with a crosshair controller by an analog stick.

I guess I don't understand. Replace analog stick with remote, and I'm pretty sure that's the same. I don't think your cursor will be able to fly around to the other three quadrants of the screen.

I see what you're saying, and it could get pretty fine, but honestly, at least Nintendo sees friendly gaming as a still viable option, which is even hinted at in the system's name.
