A few questions:
1) Where did you buy your psp?
2) What firmware are you running?
3) what region code is the UMD you are trying to play?

Assuming you're trying to play a US UMD in the system, it means that your PSP is from another country. There's really nothing you can do about it.

I have the same problem. I have a US PSP running 3.10 OE and all of my other US UMDs work. I bought a Chris Benoit UMD from ebay (same region as my others) and it will not work. I've even put the Firmware into region free UMD mode. Anyone know if there is a distributor or sometrhing to write to? I'm only out $5 bucks, but I'd still like it to work.

Disable Fake Region (Fake Region/ Disabled) and see if that helps.. Are you Sure its Region 1 and not 2? Seems strange.

Tried that 1st off. :) Yeah it's region 1. My other UMDs work either way just my Chris Benoit. It was factory sealed when I bought it and just didn't think to try to till about 3 weeks ago.

Strange.. Maybe its the UMD

People have said that custom firmware doesn't in fact work to make your PSP play video UMDs from other regions. I don't have any from any other regions, so I can't test it out.

I know it doesn't work on any custom firmware up to 3.10 OE-A`. I've tried all possible configurations.

You have a few people who say it actually works, and others that say it still doesn't work on 3.40 OE-A, but I'm very skeptical. I haven't found a reason to move up yet, so I'm staying at 3.10 for now.

It works for me, and reading on the QJ Forums it seems that people with Japanese PSP are having the most trouble running it Region Free. Also I am on 3.30 OE

That's my best guess, but I didn't see an address of a distributor or anything to write to to exchange a defective UMD. It was factory sealed and so not the guy on ebay's fault. It's mine for not opening and trying to play it, but really.. who knew?
