Baptists call off 8-year Disney boycott
16-million-strong group started boycott in '97 because Disney offered benefits to same-sex partners.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest U.S. Protestant denomination, ended its eight-year-old boycott of the Walt Disney Co. Wednesday and said it had made its point.

The 16-million-member group began the boycott in 1997 to protest Disney giving benefits to same-sex partners of employees, and at that time urged members to boycott the company's parks and products.

But the group's annual convention Wednesday passed a resolution saying "The boycott has communicated effectively our displeasure concerning products and policies that violate moral righteousness and traditional family values, and for a boycott to be effective, it must be specifically targeted and of limited duration."

In declaring an end to the action it urged Disney to "serve the families of America by providing only those products that affirm traditional family values."

It also said Southern Baptists should "practice continued discernment regarding all entertainment products from all sources."

Disney had no immediate comment.

Church officials had earlier noted that the American Family Association, a Christian group which monitors media content, had ended its own Disney boycott in May.

They said that group decided to step back because of other more pressing matters involving U.S. culture and "positive signs" at Disney including the planned resignation of company chief Michael Eisner.

The meeting also passed a resolution urging parents to monitor public schools for influences of "homosexual activists and their allies."

Parents and churches should do research and monitor entertainment and educational influences on children through access to textbooks, curricula and teachers, and decide whether public, private or home schooling is most appropriate, it said.

"Homosexual activists and their allies are devoting substantial resources and using political power to promote the acceptance among schoolchildren of homosexuality as a morally legitimate lifestyle," the statement said.

Damn elitest intellectuals and liberal media, the next thing you know they'll be saying that the first democracy was created by homos, and that many of the world's greatest contributors to philosophy, art, and literature were homos.
Of all the things to boycott, I mean being in the south you really think they could have found a more local pressing problem to combat.
Well, they are Baptists ...

I like the rationale that for the boycott to be effective it had to end at some point. Typically a successful boycott ends when the other side gives in to some or all of your demands. Yep, Disney really rolled over for you fundies, didn't they?

Despite what the boycotters claim....I think Disney ended up being the winner in the end. Just my 2 cents.

Keep this article in mind anytime you want a solid example of a social movement organization keeling over dead, their effort a dismal failure. These organizations have nothing to claim as a victory, small media attention aside.

As with most religious wars, there was no winner in the end.

All that happened is some fundie kids lost out on a common childhood experience, and maybe Disney resorts had a few weekends where the resorts weren't booked solid.
