Replacing DS Lite touch screen - anyone done it?

My DS Lite's touch screen is a bit flakey in that it is accurate at the right and left edges, but as you move toward the middle it gets more and more off, seeing your press being a bit to the right of where you are pressing. Calibration is problematic, often making me go round and round many times, and then it ends up like it was before. I decided, rather than sending it in for a $75+shipping repair or buyinga replacement, I'll try the repair myself. Supposedly it isn't that difficult. I'm getting a replacement touch screen and tri-wing screwdriver for $23 total, so if I can do it this will definitely work out well. Has anyone done such a replacement before? Any tips you could provide would be helpful, especially anything I need to know about taking the DS Lite apart and putting it back together? Any gotchas?

I did it a few times with the Phat.

Be slow when taking it apart. The Phat screens were all connected with flat wires about 10 across? There are little levers on each side of the receiving end of the screens protectors. Open those before you try to take apart the wires.

I am realizing this is making no sense so i will stop there and suggest you google it I am sure its been done with pictures.

And i am surprised NOA is charging $75 plus shipping for this....?

Your DS is having the same exact problem as mine. Works great on the left or right edges, but in the middle the touch screen registers everything to right of where I'm actually pressing. Makes playing Planet Puzzle League impossible.

I hadn't even thought of trying to replace it myself (I'm not that skilled with electronics), but I'm curious how it works for you. My solution was to go buy a new one... not the most cheapass solution, but a solution.

Post how it went here, so I can decide weather I should attempt it or not.

Thanks for the YouTube link, etc. I will definitely post back here with the results of my fix attempt. I don't have the screen/screwdriver yet, though they've been shipped (probably slowly.)

Update: I found a very nice page that step-by-steps the disassembly of the DS Lite. It isn't specific to replacing the screen, rather to over/underclocking the thing, but in the process of the mod I think they take the touchscreen off, so hopefully this will do the trick: http://www.modd3d.com/articles/item/overclock-your-nintendo-ds-lite

So far this is the only such step-by-step disassembly guide I've been able to find. The only thing I'm worried about are the L & R buttons. Tiny springs are scary.

Well, I got the touchscreen a while back, but I haven't done the replacement yet, because I'm scared, but I still intend to try. :) I did find a much better guide on the web. In this case the guide is for replacing the bottom LCD (as opposed to the touchscreen - they are two parts, though stuck together with double-sided sticky tape). Replacing the touchscreen is essentially the same. The touchscreen I got is just that - the touchscreen only. So I will have to separate the LCD from the touchscreen as shown in the guide, albeit doing so in such a fashion as to keep the double-sided tape on the LCD instead of the touchscreen. Anyway, here is the guide for anyone interested:

Life would be a bit easier, but more expensive, if you bought a replacement touchscreen+LCD already connected together, though I'm not sure of any source for such.

Why you just try to crack a hingle and send it back to NOA for free repair. Most of the time they give you a new one.

is there a time limit on that hinge thing, cause i've got two dslites with cracked hinges, and i'd love two brand new ones.

There was hinges on the first generation of DS Lites. So you should definitely call them in case. I'm not aware of any time limits for repair/replacements. If there is a time limit, just play stupid and they will probably allow you to sent it back for repair/replacement.

if they're still within warranty (1-year), you shouldn't have an issue

Well, I tried it, and all went pretty well until I got to putting the small ribbon cable back and... I broke the connector. The little black part you are suppose to flip up in order to insert the cable proves to be very fragile, it would seem, and handling that tiny cable and connector is difficult. I broke the black part right off. There is now no way to connect the touchscreen cable. The end result is I have a very nice looking DS that plays GBA games great, and some DS games (games that don't use/require touchscreen input). Sigh. :( At this point I'm going to sell it on ebay (with full disclosure - I'm not going to rip anyone off) and buy a replacement. Oh well. It was educational anyway.

sorry to hijack the thread but I am having trouble as well with this, will Nintendo know if I open my DS?

It's still under warranty but Im in Hong Kong and I bought it in the U.S. and I wont be back for a while.

My touchscreen doesnt detect all that accurately so I wanna open it to clean it.

Well, presuming you don't break anything, I don't see how they would know. There is nothing like a seal that you'd have to break in order to open it up. You have to remove the rubber feet to get at two of the screws, but they are easily put back in place. Having said that, I doubt cleaning the touchscreen will do any good. You probably have to replace it.

I'd suggest either that you send it in to Nintendo for repair, or if you can't do that, either live with it as is, or sell it on ebay with full disclosure as to the condition and buy a replacement.
