Enemy Territory is an online World War II FPS that is able to differentiate itself from the competition with its engrossing class system. To make things even sweeter this game has been released for free of charge! You can download it from Return to Castle Wolfenstein’s official website. It was originally going to be released as an expansion pack for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, although in the end Activision and Id Software decided to release it as a free stand-alone game.

Graphically this game still looks pretty damn good, even when you compare it to today’s heavy hitters such as Battlefield 2. Environments are colorful and very well detailed. From the cold and gloomy European front to the bright and sun parched North African front, your eyes will love every minute. The environments in this game truly make you feel as if you are in that particular location. On top of that tons of new maps have been added by the modding community, all of which are fun to play. Player models are also extremely detailed and look very good. Authentic guns and uniforms really enhance the overall experience.

In terms of sound quality Enemy Territory is second to none. Every single gun in this game has a unique sound, you can easily tell the difference between an MP-40 (Axis) and a Thompson (Allies). Explosions from dynamite, grenades, and air raids are also distinct and are done well. Hearing an air raid for the first time really sent chills down my spine; I actually got a little frantic and desperately went looking for cover. There are also several simple voice commands you can input with your keyboard, all of which can be done easily. I can tell that they really took their time with the voice acting. The sound in this game does a great job of adding to the atmosphere.

Gameplay is online only and consists of you and your teammates completing certain objectives, such as destroying a generator. What side you choose to play on will determine whether you will be on the offensive or on the defensive. Allies are usually on the offense while the Axis is on defense. You will have fun regardless of which side you choose. The fun factor can be hampered a bit if you and your teammates aren’t able to work together though.

The class system is where this game truly shines and sets itself apart from the rest of the competition. There are five different class systems: Engineer, Field Ops, Covert Ops, Medic, and Soldier. Each of these classes has its own abilities and its own unique set weapons and equipment (look out for Soldiers with Panzerfausts!). You can upgrade your player when you do a job specific to your class, which earns you experience points. It is this RPG-like part of the game that really hooks you in and keeps you playing for hours.

Overall, Enemy Territory is an excellent game that any FPS fan will love and will have you absolutely addicted with its class system. Considering that this game is also available for Macs and Linux, no one has any excuse for not checking out this game. Oh yeah just incase you forgot, it’s FREE. Now if you will excuse me, I have some more n00bs to own, see you online!

Incredible game. I pretty much agree with your review, except I give the online play a 2 out of 5. Single player was a blast, though.

People still play that? Great game, but last time I checked it was pretty empty.

You are mistaken, he is reviewing the free standalone RTCW expansion, online only.
