Rhino Games Question

This is just a question on Rhino in general... how are they with the retro games? Do they generally stock rarer, harder to find games, and are the games complete, or mostly cart only? I remember a store called Gameswitch, that had both.. they were expensive, but it was nice that they stocked rare games as well.

Or is it mostly like Gamerush, where it's just crappy sports titles and other such garbage?

Just asking because it's a 30 minute drive to check it out, and I wasn't sure how to phrase this into an easy question for a phone call.

My Rhino, personally, has a ton of rare older games, mainly because no one wants them for the price. At mine, they just print off box art and stick it in what appears to be a VHS rental case turned on its site. Whether or not the games are complete are YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary, or different at your store).. but my Rhino has Harvest Moon 64, Paper Mario 64, rare Dreamcast fighters, rare(r) PS1 games.. and none of them are over $40, they're all between $20 and $40..

And what's great is that they have this 2 for 1 deal.. not sure if you're familiar with it, trade in two games that they sell for $24.99 or more and get a new game free.. so technically, you could get any rare game for two common new(er) games. Just ask them to check if it's complete, they do at mine and they probably will at yours. You should call and ask for specific games (though don't expect something like Suikoden 2 in stock) and the price and if they're complete or not.

Yea, I don't expect Suikoden 2, but more along the lines of uncommon stuff. My list is too big to call them, I just wanted to know what to expect before I drove 30 minutes away to find 20 copies of NHL 95.

Do they give good trade in credit for older games? If they do, it's a sure thing I'll at least find something there... I know no one will trade in older stuff to say, Gamerush, since they give 25 cents for ANYTHING retro.

Thanks for the lengthy reply, Scorch.

Actually, they do. I picked up 9 games for $45 at that GameCrazy sale.. traded in Ogre Battle 64, StarCraft 64, Cruis'n Exotica, Bust a Move 99, Dr. Mario, Mario Tennis, Harvest Moon 64.. and something else.. and got like $115 in credit. The only one I can remember specifics of was Harvest Moon 64, that got $16 in credit. You can call and ask about that as well, they will give three or four values over the phone. Rhino's become my new favorite game store, I strongly recommend taking a trip out there.

My Rhino is exactly the same way as Scorch's. A few great older games. Buy 2 get 1 free on those most of the time. The trade in deals are also very nice, just like mentioned. I've found quite a few decent games everytime I go there. Recently got a copy of fatal frame 2 on Xbox for only 24.99 new. They commonly stock a TON of ps1 games, some of which are impossible to find. I picked up my copy of Intelligent Qube this way.

Thanks.

I wasn't looking to trade anything in, just to see if they give decent trade in values so other people are compelled to trade their games in. Nobody wants to take 25 cents for any retro game, but at 10 or so dollars people will trade that old stuff away like nobody's business.

I'll post in this thread how the experience was, hopefully it will be as awesome as you say it is. This seems to be my last chance to find a store that sells retro games, so I hope they don't disappoint.

Oh, right! I totally forgot that they have a buy 2 get 1 free on all older gen games all the time.. or so it seems.. up to $14.99.

A lot of stuff is on clearance at mine (25% off). The only thing that Rhino is extremely bad about is lowering prices, and you can use this to your huge advantage. Example.. Rhino still has Cold Fear and Phantom Brave at $49.99. You could purchase several from EBGames, do trades, and have a ton of credit. I'm currently sitting on $250 from 2-for-1 credit.

They also have this awesome deal where if you don't like the game, bring it back.. if the game's in great condition, they'll give you a full refund.

Pretty much the same deal at my local Rhino. I picked up my Valkyrie Profile there, and they've had 2 or 3 in-stock since then. I also got Intelligent Cube from them, and some other hard-to-find games. I'm still hoping that one day they'll get a Suikoden 2 in - only problem is, most of the guys that work there are big RPG buffs so they'd probably grab it first.

Too bad there are none of them anywhere near me... next best thing is a locally owned comic/game/movie store hybrid in my area that has PSone games for $10 regardless of rarity (well, not really, the Lunars usually go for $20 up there).

The staff there often snap up rare titles as well, but I like the prices and the 7-day hold system (which I admit to abusing while Christmas shopping for my best friend; got her both Lunars for $36).
