Just received the February 08 issue of Play Magazine (Afro Samurai cover) and tucked away in the GTAIV preview was this line: "The game is both PS3 and 360, but Rockstar has suggested that all further game development is going to be PS3 exclusive."

I doubt Rockstar and Take Two are in a financial position to leave all that Xbox 360 money on the table but maybe they plan to make the PS3 the lead platform going forward.

Sony NEEDS Rockstar... La Noire is supposed to be their next big game that's going to be exclusive to PS3. I got a feeling that GTA IV might get thrown in the MOTS bin, and hopefully, it'll open up an opportunity for another Rockstar franchise to get big... for Sony's sake hopefully its La Noire

I would think Rockstar would make this decision after it sees how well GTA IV sells on each platform and then make that platform the lead (but not exclusive). With Rockstar having to make the Hot Coffee settlement, I would have thought the company's sole concern right now would be making money.

Take Two is in serious financial trouble trouble though.

I hadn't heard that the ps3 exclusive game was La Noire. Where has that been confirmed? I thought I was reading something the other day (either egm or game informer) and it said that the ps3 exclusive would be a next gen red dead revolver type game.

This is Michael Shorrock. I’m the Director of 3rd Party Relations at SCEA. As you may have seen this morning/last night on GameHead with Geoff Keighley, we are announcing that a new franchise from Rockstar Games will be exclusive to PS3. As part of our long standing relationship with Rockstar, and the incredible success for both companies with the cultural icon that is Grand Theft Auto, we’ve agreed to the PlayStation exclusive rights of the next great franchise from the Rockstar studios.

Everyone knows to have success in this business you need to look ahead, identifying the talent and titles that are going to give consumers new kinds of gaming experiences that help set the bar for the rest of the industry. Rockstar has a heritage for doing just that. We have had incredible success with the GTA franchise and are happy to continue to offer those titles on our platforms, and even more excited about what’s to come from the current and future relationship between our companies. Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that.. This is really a win-win situation for both companies. As Jack mentioned in the interview with Geoff, this franchise is not LA Noire, but something all new. We agreed with Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive Software that we wouldn’t disclose anything more about the deal or title at this time, so stay tuned, we’ll share more info as soon as we can.

I think it could be that western game, because I remember them showing it for PS3 once.

If true, it makes no sense at all. Unless the cost and time needed to develop for the 360 is huge, why would they want to limit the number of people who can buy their game? I'm sure that after GTAIV comes out, and the 360 version outsells the PS3 version by a wide margin, they would think twice about this.

If it's true, which I doubt.

No shit, to hell with GTA IV give me L.A. Noire!

Yeah, Rockstar/Take Two's finances are a mess right now. They haven't had any big selling games since GTA:SA. It wouldn't be surprising if Sony was able to buy exclusive rights to all/many of their future games. They need the cash, and now.

If I remember correctly, that's the way Rockstar has always done it, like many other devs/pubs out there. They trickle out the info in small bite sized morsels, to get your appetite for the games they're producing just satiated enough to keep you wanting more.

As for me, I'm waiting for RDR 2 and I certainly hope it's on PS3, since I'm close to nabbing a 60 gigger locally, once my one friend buys my old gen stuff for $450.

It's likely LA Noire went from being made on the Xbox 1/PS2 hardware spec, was shelved, then redesigned for the 360/PS3 spec. And now that Sony is shelling out money for exclusives to make up for how MS snagged all the good exclusives in 2007 and early 2008, I figure Rockstar, and namely Take 2, partook of some of that money to help bail them out.

I read somewhere that Rockstar said LA Noire couldn't even be done on the 360 because the game takes up more than 1 DVD (similar to MGS4). And I wouldn't want a multi-DVD GTA-type game, I don't know about the rest of you.

No, I really doubt that's the sole reason. Remember that the publisher would be more willing to cut stuff out of the game to make it fit than to not release it on a more popular console. Just look at all the Wii ports.

While the extra space and standard hard drive were certainly a factor choosing which console the game would be made for, it's more likely that a huge wad of cash from Sony was the deciding factor in which consoles LA Noire would be published for.

And frankly, that's just a good sign that competition between MS and Sony is working to the benefit of us gamers. From the sounds of it, Rockstar/Take Two was really in trouble, if there hadn't been so much competition to get new exclusives for either system, it's likely they wouldn't have been bailed out by MS (50 million deal for GTA4 downloadable content) and Sony (LA Noire exclusive deal), and as such, some of these games would never have been made.

It doesn't seem to make sense on its own, but like many have said it could be very possible if Sony bought them out. Sony needs all the exclusives they can get, so that would seem likely.

Hmmm... Michael Shorrock... Why does that name ring a bell?

Does anyone know if there is a game industry bio site? I could swear this guy ran The Sega Channel back in the day. Either that, or I've met him in person. Man, this is going to irk me now...

"Good bye, thanks for the $50 million! It has been swell!"

I don't think so.

That could really mean any number of things. It could be as simple as that after the exclusive content for 360 is out, the PS3 will get exclusive content as well. It could be a typo, and they meant that further development would be the exclusive 360 stuff.

And, since there hasn't been much of it yet, let's throw in some fun off-the-wall guesses. How about... maybe GTA4 isn't shaping up well, so they took a ton of money from Sony right now while they still have credibility. Let's be fair, Rockstar/Take Two is having financial troubles, and GTA4 is really their make or break game. If GTA4 is even remotely disappointing, and, given the recent track record it's certainly possible, they'd be done. Sure, GTA4 is going to make money regardless, but if the 'big dog' comes back and doesn't fulfill it's promise, people are going to turn on the series in a big way. It's been stagnant for a long time now, so they need to knock this one out of the park. As I said, for a wacky-ass theory, maybe Rockstar knows they have a turkey, so they decided to take the money while people were still offering it.

It's unlikely, but it certainly happened with the Tony Hawk franchise, as I was stunned to discover that skate outsold Proving Ground 2:1.

I doubt Rockstar and Take Two are in a financial position to leave all that Xbox 360 money on the table but maybe they plan to make the PS3 the lead platform going forward.
