Soulcalibur IV players have likely noticed a blank spot on the game's character-select screen, on the top row, nestled in-between The Force Unleashed's Secret Apprentice and console-exclusives Yoda (on the Xbox 360) or Darth Vader (on the PlayStation 3). That gap has long fueled rumors and assumptions that the console-exclusive characters wouldn't stay exclusive, and Namco Bandai finally confirmed as much today.

Nearly three months after the game's July launch, each version of Soulcalibur IV will get the other version's exclusive character as downloadable content. Starting on Thursday, October 23, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Darth Vader from the Xbox Live Marketplace for 400 Microsoft Points ($5), whereas PS3 players can grab Yoda from the PlayStation Network for $4.99.

To (almost) nobody's surprise. 'Bout damn time -- I was getting tired of looking at that empty box.

Eh, I'll pass. I like paying for a game once, and stopping there.

And weren't these characters locked in each game to begin with? Would it be so wrong to give it out for free?
not sure I want to pay $4.99 for a broken character, lol
I assume you mean Yoda? I'm not sure why everybody thinks that -- I've never had a problem dealing with a Yoda player online, perhaps because they tend to be scrubs. Frankly, the Apprentice whores and masher/pitbulls are much bigger issues, IMO.

Good question. We probably won't know until they're actually available for download. If the file size is something like "108 k" then yeah, they're already on the disk. If they're a few megs, then probably not. I suspect one of our Namco Ninjas like MarkMan would know.

i dont see how nobody could see this coming. hopefully they will allow a free download after a month or so but probably not. next theyll have you paying to continue in the game just so you get that arcade experience.

It's bad enough that they're making people pay, but what really gets me is how long they made us wait for something that probably could have been unlocked in less than a minute. I'm just glad these type of gimmicks don't interest me in the slightest.

This should have been one of those DLC that you CAN unlock in the game OR say "fuck it, here's my $5".

I know on XBL, they have some bonus weapons that CAN be unlocked in the game--it even tells you
I would not have minded being able to unlock Darth Vader--regardless of the difficulty.

This is Scamco we are talking about here. They love putting up tons of DLC where you can gain 10 levels (by paying via MS points) and other things. I'm going to bet they are already on the disc and Namco is going to have you pay for unlock keys (where they are 100KB). That's Namco for you, and that's why I am not shocked by this. They love having tons of pointless DLC, nickle and dime people (they charged $0.99 for a music track for Ridge Racer 7).

This is as bad as Konami selling DDR Universe songs in the Marketplace, at 100KB in size. All you do is pay for unlock keys on the disc (you can't even unlock the music). Konami just sees it as doing you a favor since you don't need to use HDD space and they feel every DDR only needs 50-70 songs to sell, and no more.

Yeah, no thanks.

But I don't really see the problem here. It's no different than SCII having exclusive characters for each console, but at least this time they're giving you the chance to have the other platform's character. They're overcharging for that chance and it's totally ass, but whatever.
