Yes in all honesty, these consoles will never increase in value to such a point that you are significantly increasing your value over time, i.e. let's say you can sell that particular model quite readily today for $500.
What's the most you will be able to get for it in the future, $550? $600 max? Versus say $500 today? That's a 10-20% increase in value in most likely over a year minimum...not bad but certainly nothing to write home about. There are better investments out there (and a hell of a lot more liquid) if that's all you're concerned with, and remember, your investment will also be "tied up" in the console while you hold it, not to mention taking up space and being virtually unusable as a sealed boxed unit. Now if the value were to somehow go to $1000 or beyond within a year, the chances of which are none and none, then we'd be talking.
Take the money now, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony brings back backwards compatibility in a future version, possibly at a slight premium, but consoles virtually always get cheaper over time, especially EXTREMELY mass produced ones.
