MrX

CAGiversary!
I have both and have not watched either yet. Which should I watch first? Will Senernity give me a better understanding of the events in Firefly or is it the ending of Firefly?

Yeah you absolutely have to watch Firefly first its not even a questionable kind of thing. The events in Serenity will make a lot more sense and well some stuff that happens in Serenity will make watching Firefly 2nd far less enjoyable. So yeah absolutely firefly before serenity.

what I did was watch the episode called "Out of gas" on the firefly set. Gives you an introduction to the characters , then go back to disc 1 and start watching the series THEN watch Serenity. I like Pilots but when this series didn't start with a pilot introduction episode, I went to Out of gas first. Still trying to find the time to watch the shows.

Serenity was meh.

firefly first then serenity if you wanna go in order. However I do give credit to serenity for being watchable without having to see firefly.

Watch Firefly first, from the beginning. Then watch Serenity, as it's a very good proper ending to the series. If you really like the verse then pick up the graphic novel that contains the comics that connect the movie and the show to understand some of the changes to the characters.
Oh snap ... I watched Serenity but havent seen Firefly. Oh well.
I have a lot of friends who love Serenity but have never seen Firefly.

I enjoyed Serenity quite a bit .. lots of eye candy doesnt hurt either :)

The pilot is a bore but there is no point in watching Firefly last. Watch the whole show from the beginning and then frankly pretend the horrid movie doesn't exist. The movie is entertaining, but with Firefly it messes things up. The charaters are completely out of it, times are hard but they have a speeder bike, and the pacing of the movie is slow at first and then rushed at other times. There are other problems with it I won't say because it would wreck Firefly.

Watch Firefly first - no question about it. The series is better than the movie but the movie was still good. This is the biggest cancellation shame in television history as far as I'm concerned (narrowly beating AD - at least we got 3 seasons of that).

Wow, I can't believe how many of you guys are hating on the movie? I thought the movie was very well done... opening scene through ending.

No spoilers here.. but I will say I love how the movie opens up and the tone is just darker. The movie needed to distance istelf (in some way) from the television show. It needed to push itself... and explain some of the loose ends from the show. I felt it succeeded on both ends.

I loved the show too... but if you're going to be that picky then you should admit to yourself there were some silly "television science fiction" things, for sure about the show. Sure it's part of the charm, but I don't understand why you're making it sound like Firefly was Citizen Kane and Serenity some sort of huge misstep.

So basically, all of your opinions are wrong.. I just proved it ;)

That's another thing I don't like! It was darker when the show was dark and funny. The movie just doesn't match all the charaters we knew and loved from the show. I did like the Reaver parts and the ending was different than most movies, but still, the show is so much better.

Who said they hated Serenity? Everyone is just agreeing that you should watch the Firefly series before tackling the movie.

I'll say it. Hated the movie. I thought the intro was cool, then it went down hill. Never saw the series, heard good things about it. Took the kids to see it, they liked it, but that's not saying much. Thought the movie was predictable (even without knowing the series) and a bore. If it wasn't for the kids, I would've left.

A lot of people ^ (up there, but I guess it's their time up there.. which is fine because down here it's our time) were hating on it. (Note, I said hating not "hated.")

From what I've heard the movie Serenity is more like what Firefly would have been if Fox hadn't stepped in and told them to add more jokes. Actually if you watch the Serenity 2 part pilot episodes you can tell it's before Fox told them to lighten up the show.

That's true. I definitely remember that from some commentary I heard, either on one of the episodes or the movie. That was what Joss said, basically, that everything was a bit darker before the network stepped in.

Though personally, I thought the jokes did work very well, and they were right to ask for them during the series, as it kept it from being too full of itself and taking itself too seriously (Star Trek/BSG/etcetera), which was a large part of it's charm.

And also, I thought that there was some of that humour in the film too. It wasn't completely dour or anything.. just a desperate situation that they found themselves in. Because they were more light hearted in the TV series, I thought it made the movie have a sense of desperation and urgency.

And the Mal fight scenes, in particular, were awesome - you could actually see what was going on.

Very much agreed, I hate those jump cuts that every single director seems to do. Sure it may make everything look like it's happening fast and intense, but for a lot of us, it is confusing to actually follow what's happening.

I liked both Firefly and Serenity alot. I think alot of times a few people give both of them (and whedon himself) more credit than they deserve, especially the diehard fans. But that's not the issue here, and I really enjoyed both equally. I think some peoples' dislike of Serenity vs. the show comes from them trying to compare and contrast the film and show too much, not realizing that movies and TV are two very different mediums to operate in. You just have to step back a little to realize that they are NOT supposed to be identical. Some fans are too subjective to see the qualities of each as they should be.

I started watching Firefly and I have to stay I am crazy addicted to it!! How the fuck could this have ever been canceled??????

General idiocy and happenstance.

The show has gained a following after it's release simply because people have been able to watch it at their own leisure. When a show actually airs, the networks want people to watch from the beginning, to have an audience first. Then once that's established, they keep it going for as long as they can, so long as viewership doesn't completely fall to hell. (see: 7th Heaven/the Simpsons/Law & Order/Home Improvement/CSI/90210/etc.)

If they don't get an audience quick enough they're S.O.L. and sadly a lot of shows slip away due to that, or them not being promoted correctly, or as heavily as was necessary. (see: Dead Like Me, Firefly, Sports Night, Point Pleasant, Dark Angel, Titus, Wonderfalls, Sealab, Clerks, and that's just from my personal little DVD collection)

This is pretty much the case with Firefly. Also FOX decided to F with the actual episode order, and that possibly confused people.

Perhaps it's because I don't have cable television anymore but it is an absolute travesty that I never knew about this show (when it was on air) and never heard about the movie until a year after it came out. I never saw a trailer in the theatre even. I'm the kind of person that I would have checked the movie out just because I like sci-fi - sort of what the hell, why not?

I am a bad Browncoat!

I never watched it when it aired either for several reasons.

1. It was on Fox and it was dead even before it started.
2. It was on Fox and they treated the show like shit.
3. It was a sci-fi show on Fox.
4. Fox aired the show backwards and all over.
