Settlers DS?

I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be. I asked for it when I picked up my copy of Puzzle Quest, and it turns out they pushed it back to 5/23.

Yeah, I asked the guy at my local EB last week and he confirmed it has been pushed back to May 20-something.

He didn't know anything about it, and neither do I. Can someone who has experience with the original games tell us a bit about it?

Damn :(

hello,

I consider myself to be a fan of the settlers games. They're called "Die Siedler" in germany and I believe, at some time they've been published as "Serf City" - in case this helps you search. Also you can find some information at BlueByte (german software house that used to make the games. I believe, nowadays they're part of UbiSoft), I also think I've seen the possibility to download demos there (a demo of Settlers 1 got me addicted)

Although I didn't like the original Settlers 2 on PC (I've played 1 for a long time and 2 just removed some features I liked... Still 3 is something I like to play whenever I have some time), I'm willing to give it a try on DS.

Thanks for the message it was pushed back. I also had "end of march" in mind and was wondered that suddenly it was may on the homepage. Still I'm somehow surprised that this DS game is published outside of germany (german games tend to have a hard time outside)

The game itself: (sorry for substituting the names. I find my english much worse than I believed it to be)

It's kind of simulation. First target is being able to build things. So most times you start with building a house for someone who chucks wood (needs an axe).
Next you can't build houses with simple trees, they have to be converted into a usable form. You need a lumber mill (needs a saw). Also you need stones for building new houses... So find a place of some rocks and build a house for someone who makes them into usable stones.
You can also find stones in hillls, but as people working under the ground need to be fed, you either have to have fisherman (next to the see), or a complete bread (needs water, needs corn) or meat (also needs water and corn, but the butcher for the little pigs needs an axe) pipeline.

You can also find coal and iron ore in the mountains. And in most missions you need, as only with these a weapon smith can build the weapons that your soldiers need to defend your borders - and fight the evil other people on the map. (did I mention, you need coal to melt the iron ore into real iron?)

Soldiers need to be happy to fight good. So you also have to find some coal and gold ore the melt into real gold to pay to your soldiers.

And as many of your people need some kind of tools, you also need a tool smith that works iron into hammers, axes, scythes, etc.

I guess you get the message, that it's a very complex game. It really might be helpful to take the tutorial (if there is one) and read the manual.

What differs 1 and 2 from later games of the series is that you have to
build every path yourself - so you also have to plan good (not too steep, because then your settlers transport things more slowly).

I believe there is a Wiki Entry on the settlers games but I hope I could give you a small description on what the game is about.

Greetings,

TCC

Ahhhh...This sounds like Townsmen (I think they're up to No. 4 now), which I have on my cell phone. Fun little townbuilding/resource management game. Would be great on the DS.

The screenshots for Settlers are pretty underwhelming. Townsmen actually looks better. And there's no excuse for a cell-phone game looking better than a DS game.

Thanks for the link. Didn't know there was such a game for mobile phone (If I ever cat a mobile phone capable of that, I think I'll try) . Still I believe Settlers2 might be more complex and more fun - if you're into such detail.

Also something about that fans have grown to love is the cuteness of the graphics... every settler is animated, walks the paths (I really recommend trying a PC demo to get into spirit). The little pigs move around. fishs jumping in the water.

To be honest: Playing this game is a wonderful way to relax - to me - the music, the cute animations, the "slowness" - of course you have to be quick in some moments but most of the time, good planning wins over speed...

I hope you are right. Townsmen is similarly cute, with funny little character animations. It is quite detailed for a cell game, which is one of the reasons I enjoyed it. But it's pretty apparent that these games are clones of one another and that if you like one, it's fairly certain you'll like the other.

So this is not related to Settlers of Catan at all? (Never played that game, but know of it and actually bought a copy at a yard sale for cheap last year.)

Sounds like this could be a game I'd like, if it's well done. IGN doesn't have a US release date for this one.

:)

The old "Settlers and Catan"-confusion. Got me for some time, too.

Settlers 1 was a PC game long before "Settlers of Catan" (board game) hit the market. At first I thought Catan to be a Board-game-version of the computer game, but it wasn't.
I really recommend playing Catan with some friends. It's a wonderful game ("Spiel des Jahres" = "game of the year" in germany) and althought it's easy to learn (manual got awards, too), it's a lot of fun to play with the right people. Building, trading, etc. - and if you already own it... ;)

Still, turn-based Catan is a lot different from real-time-Settlers. You roll dice, you trade with the other players, you build things in a different way. They share the name but they're really different games.

Funny thing is: Catan got a PC version, eventually. It's even playable online, nowadays and as far as I remember, it's kind of free to play since 2007.

Greetings,

TCC

I'll probably pick this up if it's a good bit like the board game as my boyfriend almost got into the international tournament for this, so obviously he likes to play. I could practice my mad skillz and possibly beat him someday. ;)
