Okay, Im thinking about buying Morrowind: GOTY edition. What are your opinions on the game? Ive either read that its an amazingly brilliant game, or that it is rendered nigh unplayable because of the bugs.

Now, does the GOTY edition fix some of the bugs? And those that get playing the game, do you stay hooked? I mean, with the expansions, they say that the gameplay has something like 180 hours, with unlimited replay.

So just tell me your impressions if you would. 'Twould be most appreciated :D Thanks in advance.

When I first played the game, I played it for about a month straight. Then I realized that I hadn't bothered to do any of the story-related missions, and that opened up even more material. It is an enormous world to explore.

It's an action RPG, so you have to do all the attacking yourself, which some folks might find tedious. The only bugs I've run into are the ones where the game freezes up. Once your save file gets to be a certain size, you learn to save fairly often, and save three or four seperate files.

I enjoyed it a lot and every one I've let play it has been hooked almost immediately.

Eh, it's ok. The problem is that it's so non-linear that a lot of times you have no idea what to do. But if you're really into walking around vast expanses talking to random people to receive quests, you'll love it.

I agree with what has been said. I definately don't have the patience to complete or even play a lot of what the game has to offer, but if you want a "true" role playing experience, this is the game to get. Worth picking up just to see how huge the game is.

And don't let the glitches make you not buy it. There may be some, but since only the people who get the lockups complain, it makes it seems like they are much more common then they actually are.

I enjoyed it very much; I'm not sure what bugs you are referring to. I didn't hit any, really, and thought the game world to be well designed and enjoyable to roam around in. I slogged through a ton of side-quests but was able to run through the Story-related quests without too much trouble. I only went through the main game and the Tribunal add-on, however. I haven't had the chance to go through the Bloodmoon expansion pack, which I believe is included in the game of the year edition.

addendum: I had a blast making enchanted items in that game...but be warned: this is a sure way to break the game (i.e. make it so that your character can trounce everything in sight.) If you want to maintain a fun level of difficulty, practice moderation in your item enchantment.

My brother got Morrowind a year ago and I didn't see him for weeks. He's a fan of RPG's and he still plays the game every once in a while to do things he didn't complete.

I myself haven't played it (doesn't seem like my type of game), but if you're into RPG's you should find some enjoyment in it.

I believe he's speaking about the PC version. There is at least two bugs in the Xbox version that I know of. First off is the freezing, which as mentioned, occurs when the file size of the save gets too large. There is two things that I do to prevent this. First off, I junk all the bodies I kill, that way the system doesn't have to remember where they are... and second is, if you get to a place where it freezes, sleep for a week. There is no penalty for sleeping, and when that is done, all the little things in the world you may have tinkered with, bodies, items etc maybe gone and that would free up file size.
The other bug, is a sword, that decreases your skill points. The decrease in skill points it suppose to only occur while you have the sword equipped, but for the original xbox version, the loss of skill points is permentate. I don't know if they fixed that in the GOTY edition, but it would be easy to do.

But please, don't let me scare you... the bugs are nothing compared to what the world has to offer. Just remember to come up for air every week or so... and tell your family you love them, cause you won't be seeing much of them anytime soon.

Enjoy

Awesome game - - just about impossible to do and see every last thing. This is probably the only game out in which getting the strategy guide would enhance the experience. It'll tell you about all kinds of cool crap that you would never see otherwise.

One more thing I forgot to add- my friend bought the original and got pretty far in it, and then bought the Game of the Year edition. But the main game has so much stuff in it, that he never even started on either of the two expansions. The game is HUGE. It will occupy you for months.

My first Morrowind experience:

I walked around town, very slowly. End up accidentally attacking a guard and got crap kicked out of me. I decide to avoid guards, wander around aimlessly. Found a beautiful woman looking for her dear departed husband.

Proceed to kill woman and take her dress and jewelry. I then equip said dress and jewelry. (the character in question is a large black male, now wearing a flowing gown and a diamond necklace).

I proceed to jump around, laugh at how ridiculous a cross-dressing black man is for at least 5 minutes.

Some kind of monster pops up out of the forest and stabs me. I then realize how little defense a dress provides, and die in two hits. I then turn off the game and never play again.

Your experience may vary.

Awesome, Im pretty sure Ill pick it up in the next EBGames B2G1 PO sale. I just wanted to see what everyone else had to say about it...

Thanks again.

This really is a love it or hate it type of game. I really dislike this game and boarderline hate it with a passion. Its really slow and the combat is kind of lame.

If your an RPG freak its kind of like heaven I guess. Its really deep and has a ton of game play.

For your average gamer/non-RPG gamer its too long and too deep.

The game is so friggin big and takes up so much time I can't even get started. I'll likely play it again if I have an injury or I am grotesquely ill and can't leave the house for months.

I think its really cool and very huge to explore and play.. but its really lacking something.. any kind of personality at all. I like the open ended gameplay, but the game feels way too serious and dull. Go play the Fallout series on PC if you want an open ended RPG with some humor and lots of personality to keep you interested. Morrowind takes itself too seriously for me to enjoy.

The GOTY version more or less fixes the bugs. As said before, dumping bodies helps, and if you don't HAVE to pick up every flower, rock, book, etc. don't. The game tracks where you move each and every item. This more than anything leads to out of control file sizes. Also the in game journal is pretty good, so you can not play for six months or so, turn it on, read your journal, and be more or less up to speed in two minutes.

Uh, I liked the game fine, but the Morrowind journal sucks. It's just listed in order of when you get quests and important info, but when you have 450 pages of quest stuff it's a bit hard to 'get up to speed in 2 minutes'.

However, that being said, it's a pretty snazzy game. Not the best, but I liked it a lot while playing through the original, Bloodmoon, and Tribunal. Make use of Mark/Recall and the mage guilds / those big bug transporter things, or else you'll be doing a lot of annoying walking. You will anyways, but this'll cut down a bit.

I've been thinking about picking the GOTY edition up as well, but I was wondering if it was as bad as the PC version. I own the first one, but not the expansions. I recall playing for 30 minutes and stealing a powerful sword from a house close to where you start, thus enabling me to kill things in 1 to 2 hits at most. Then, eventually, I made +Int (or whatever the stat is) potions to boost my Int which in return makes the next potion more powerful. Then made a +Speed (or whatever the stat is) potion that was insane and I ended up running so fast I clipped straight through walls and got stuck.
...
I guess my point is, is the GOTY edition for the console have these issues fixed?

I don't think I ever messed around with making potions, so I can't speak for the Speed thing. As far as getting overly powerful, if you manage to steal a badass weapon early, it makes the game easier to an extent. A level 5 character with good armor and a badass sword will still get destroyed easily by a Golden Saint. If the game starts getting too easy, that means it's time to start exploring further.

i bought this game and played it nonstop for weeks. I like the kind of RPG's where you actually do the fighting, and you dont do it through menu's.

I'm more of a warrior type, and i'm not that much into making potions and enchanting items and stuff... never really tried either of the 2.

But right when i started, there was so much space to explore, that i was almost scared to leave the cities. I started off in Seyda Neen (sp?) and took the silt strider to Balmora and stayed in balmora for days. IMO balmora is a real good place to start off. Its a safe place, many shops to buy stuff, many people to talk to, many jobs to be done.

once i got fairly strong, i began to explore, and for some reason i was thinking that the cities marked on my map were the only cities on the game... and then i explored and found a shitload of other places.

IMO this game is really fun, and can be addicting. I did have it freeze up on me a couple of times, but like others have said, i had already learned to save alot. But also i noticed that several times when the game crashed, right before it crashed it would stop, then start Autosaving, then it would give me the DRE message.

Oh yea, and if you get this game, when you start playing, be careful about what you steal, and who you steal it from, cause it can come back to bite you in the ass later.

Yeah. The first time I played, I stole a full suit of ebony from that guy in the.. deserty mushroom place. He noticed somehow, and came after me, so I killed him... but he doesn't have the "You have severed an essential character to the prophecy. You can still continue... in a doomed world." message, because you actually have to kill him later... but only after you use him for something. Whoops!

a mistake i made with stealing, is that right when i started, i needed money, so i was stealing everything that i could.. I seemed to have stolen a bunch of random things from the mages guild (which i am a member of) so now i have to be careful of what i try to sell to the mages guild, or they'll say i stole it and kill me.

Personally, I loved the game. If I was going to take 10 games to an Islad and never ever buy a new one, GOTY would be on the list.

But, what type of gamer are you? Do you like to play in 15 minute spurts, or will you sit and play for hours at a time? This is definitely a game that you want to play for hours at a time. In 5 minute spurts, it is almost worthless.

Also, it is slow moving. If you are an action now sort of person, I can't suggest it. But, if you like exploring, and wondering what's behind that door right up ahead, I can't suggest this game enough.

For $20 now at Gamestop, get it. It's hard to lose.

Also, one final note, I would suggest buying the strategy guide. Yeah, you can use gamefaqs, but the guide is well written and has lots of info at your fingertips. Gamefaqs has some more advanced strategies, but it can take a long time to find something when you get lost (oh, and you will at some points).

Oh, I dunno about that. Occasionally, I would poke my head inside some unassuming wooden doorway set into a harmless looking hill and *boom*...some dark elf I hadn't met before (dunno what he had against me) would scream "You n'wah!!" in my face and chop-hack-slash...I'd flop right over like a side of beef off a meathook. I'd say that there's some good action thrown in there.

I remember the first time I saw a Daedric Lord. I was poking along, minding my own business in some broken-down ruins. When I saw this guy standing there, I fingered my chin, put my face up closer to the monitor to squint at his outlandish-looking armor and thought,"What's that guy doing out here? ..and what is he wearin---wwwwhoa he's charging me!!" Action galore. :boxing:
