Should I be concerned?

I've had my PS2 for about a month now and it's had no problems thus far. Today, though, it's frozen twice. Both times while I was playing Jak 3. The first time was earlier today, right after a major cinematic started, and the second time happened a few minutes ago, just in the middle of general gameplay. Do I have something worse in store?

Thing is, I'm seven hours into Jak 3, I think if it was the game this would have happened before.

I'm just concerned that this is just the start of worse problems.

Need a little more information to figure out if you have a problem:

Did you buy it used or new?
Is it a Slim or an original (Fat) design?
Is the disc in good shape? IE: is it scratched or smudged?
Is your ps2 getting good air circulation?

Overall it may just be the disc or overheating. Which you can remedy fairly easily by buying a new copy of the game or moving your console so it gets open air. If the console is brand new then you can return it and get a new one if it has only been a month. Most warranties run you longer than that. If it is old and used then it could be a number of problems. With ps2 the common problem I remember seeing was the lens on the laser being shifted off. If you have technical know how you could try looking a solution on google if the problem persists. If not then maybe you should try contacting the person or business that sold you the unit. Off the top of my head that is all I can tell you.

A warning though, if you don't know anything about electronics do not try to crack open the console and fix it. It voids the warranty and will most likely end with you doing more damage.

The same thing happened to my wife during Ratchet & Clank. If I recall, it was a fat PS2 (bought used), and a Blockbuster previous rental copy of the game.

It would freeze at a certain cinematic every time she got there. Whether it was a combination of fat/used, I don't know, but we exchanged the game for a different copy. Problem was solved after that.

Jak 3 was pretty darn glitchy man, I doubt it's your PS2.

I've played Jak 3 on a million PS2s and I see all kinds of lockups and errors.

Try hitting triangle if you get a blank screen before a cinematic, you can rewatch all the cutscenes after you beat the game.

Thanks for the help guys.

prisonerac - It's a fatty. The disc is in great shape. Though I did just move it other day from standing up in an open area to laying flat under a TV stand that's only about an inch or so above the console. I'll have to put it out in the open again. I got the system from a trade, so it's used, but the guy that had it before me said he's never had problems with it. We'll see if there's any problems now!

willardhaven - Yeah, it froze at a certain cinematic twice before I skipped it with the triangle button the third time. But the next time it skipped, I was just riding around on the hoverboard in that stupid forest where you have to destroy the little purple dark eco plants or whatever.

I'm just going to move it out in the open and hope it just wasn't getting enough ventilation.
Don't worry about it - PS2 is solid at this point, 360 owners would love to just have these kind of "occasional random freeze" issues.
Yeah but the OP said he has a Fatty ps2. That means its old, and prone to DRE problems. Although even when my Fatty started breaking down, it never froze at cinemas, although I never played Jak 3. Hopefully its the game, but theres an outside chance its the ps2.

Ohhhhhhhh good call.

FWIW, my old and fat PS2 started freezing on DVDs and blue-backed games.

Why exactly post that? What help could that possibly be? We all know that some products are going to have problems, while some are not. I have a fat PS2 that dosent freeze on anything, but I don't post it like it's saying that a freezing PS2 is out of the ordinary. Dumb post if you ask me...

Obviously some will have issues, some will not. Yours does not.

Calm down. What help is your post criticizing his? I didn't have a problem with his at all.

Glad to see that getting more air circulating helped. :) The original design generates more heat than the new slim in my opinion, which means just like a xbox360 you have to handle with care in terms of ventilation and general cooling. Of course the biggest problem was the DRE problems mentioned previously in this thread.

/Begin rant:
I hope you got a great deal on your ps2 because the original design just seems archaic compared to the beauty that is the slim. I am such a sucker for small and simple machines. Probably explains why I bit on the launch for the Wii, that and my love to waggle. /end rant.

I traded my Gamecube and a couple GBA games for the PS2. I was pretty happy with the trade. I'm not too big on getting the newest and best and smallest/sleekest hardware. As long as it does the same thing, I'm happy.

Haha, yeah, I'm sticking with the 360 in the long run, but I've been on somewhat of a PS2 kick lately. It probably won't last too much longer... especially once Halo 3 hits... then Mass Effect... and I'll eventually pick up Bioshock.

I'll be busy this fall.

I have an ancient fat model (when I bought it, Final Fantasy X was not a Greatest Hits title yet and I think MGS2 had just come out) and didn't have any problems with it until a cat sent it plummeting six feet onto a hard floor. It was pretty easy to put back together though; the engineers that designed that thing were geniuses! Though it's a bit troubling that the original model was about 50% empty space.

If you have any problems with disc-reading, there are tutorials online for fixing the unit. If you have little to no electronics knowledge you'll probably manage if you pay close attention to the pictures -- though it definitely helps if you've taken an electronic apart in the past.

Glad to know you're satisfied with the PS2! There are a huge number of incredible games, and even though you're a little late to the party, I think you'll have plenty of fun.

Well, I'm not technically late to the party, per se. I had a PS2 about 3 years ago, and the year prior to that, my roommate had one. Once Halo 2 came out, I got all excited and sold my PS2 and games to buy an Xbox and H2. I've regretted it since, until I recently got another one. I had some keeper games, too: Castlevania: SoTN (mint, complete, non-gh), Contra: Shattered Soldier, and a few more that I can't think of... along with about 10 other great, but not so rare/pricey, games. I've made up for the downtime recently, though, so it's all good.

Oh, and I've no problems whatsoever since I moved the system to a better ventilated spot. Woo! Thanks everyone.
