Since so many CAGs hate Gamestop I thought you might like my story

CAGiversary!
First a little back story and I apologize in advance I know this is a little long winded,

A little over a year ago when Portal 2 came out my wife wanted to play Portal 1 before I was allowed to get Portal 2. So we go into our local Gamestop hoping to find a copy of The Orange Box on PS3. My wife goes up to the Gamestop employee and asks if they have it. At that point he tells her she doesn’t know what she’s talking about that The Orange Box was never on PS3 and he should know because he works in a game store. Then he makes a reference to her being a woman and not knowing anything about games. I can’t remember exactly what he said anymore since it was so long ago but I remember it being very sexist and it really pissed off my wife.

Flash forward to this last Saturday. I was at one of our local casinos and happened to win a little money. I decide to treat myself to a game I really have wanted to play (Shadow of the Damned). I call my wife up and ask her to check stock online for me and see if Gamestop has it since it is the closest place to where I am at the moment and don’t want to drive out of the way. She says they do and I head down there. I head into Gamestop and grab the game off the shelf and proceed to the counter and guess who happens to be working, the guy my wife had problems with over a year ago. He tells me that they have the copy used and would I rather have that. I tell him sure and while he is looking he proceeds to start talking about my game I’m going to buy with another Gamestop employee. I don’t mean just saying wow this is an awesome game! He starts telling the entire story giving away all the plot details. I ask him very politely to please stop talking about the game since I haven’t played it and he says and I quote “Guess its good you don’t work in a game store, I had the ending of Mass Effect spoiled 3 days after release” and then he continues to keep talking about the game.

He then tells me he can’t find the used copy and says he will have to sell me a new one. I say that’s fine and he goes to open up the drawer that the game is in which has 3 copies of the game in it. He then tells me hope you don’t mind one that’s not sealed cause this is his floor model and the only one he has. I ask about the 3 sealed copies I can see right behind him and he says and I quote “I don’t have to sell to you if I don’t feel like it; you can take this one or nothing”. At that moment all I really want is to get out of the store so I buy that copy and leave. When I got home I wrote my first letter ever to any corporation about how awful Customer Service experience I had. Can’t wait till I get a response or maybe Gamestop just doesn’t care about their patrons.

Anyway since so many people dislike Gamestop on CAG I thought I would share my story. Thanks for reading.

If he really had 3 sealed copies it makes no sense for him to sell you the "floor model" since he would then have to open one of the sealed copies, gut it, and print new price stickers to put on it.

Now, I know some people on CAG like to think they enjoy gutting games at GS, but think about it - this is completely unnecessary and I really doubt he would go out of his way to create more work for himself. What they always do when I go in there is look for a sealed one first since they can then just put the "floor" copy back out on the shelf with minimal fuss.

So either he is: 1) Being an idiot 2) Going out of his way to give you a hard time just because he really is that bad at customer service, or 3) There is something not quite right with your story. Were the other 3 really sealed copies of the same game or is it possible you saw something else?

Certainly options 1 or 2 warrant the letter. Possibility 3 would still be a case of bad customer service even if they really didn't have another copy as the “I don’t have to sell to you if I don’t feel like it; you can take this one or nothing” part is pretty appalling ;).

Good story, it pissed me off just reading it. My wife wouldn't have wanted me to return to a store that treated her like that. Here's a little non-gaming example. A few years ago my wife was late term in a pregnancy and we were in a Kohls. She was understandably tired from walking around given the late stages of the pregnancy and she sat down on a bed they had set up trying to sell sheets (or whatever). Some early 20's employee comes by and tells her that she can't sit on the bed, it's display only and they have chairs in the front of the store. We had several things we were going to buy at the time that we were carrying but she and I were so pissed off that he wouldn't let a pregnant lady sit down for 2 minutes that we abandoned the things we were going to purchase and walked out of the store. Not only have we never returned to that Kohls, we never returned to ANY kohls, it's been 4 years now.

As for GameStop, why even bother? Just buy from Amazon. I cant believe you didn't walk out when that guy was a dick to your wife or when he treated you this way. I hate GameStop.

Story is completely true every last word. I didn't understand the whole why are you selling me the open copy when I see sealed ones right behind you either. I figure he was just a jerk. I'm a really nice guy and I let a lot of crap go, it was just amazing how out of line he was.

We walked out that day, and truth was I forgot about the incident till my wife reminded me. (Women never forget ) As for buying from Amazon I had just won money and I wanted it that second, waiting 2 days for delivery was just too long at that second

If that's the case, then he went out of his way to be a jerk to you even at the expense of making more work for himself (or possibly his coworkers - making him a double-time jerk ;)).

But you really can't judge a whole chain, or even that one store, based on that one guy. I have dealt with many GS workers over the years and there are a few that annoy me and at times I will avoid their stores since I can just go to other ones. But the vast majority of them have been very nice and very helpful and as I said will almost always look for sealed copies for me. And they never have an attitude when I double check to see if they have a sealed one (should they get the gutted one out) nor have they even seemed to care when I refused a purchase because their last copy is gutted - in fact, many of them fully sympathize with that.

What I've found slightly annoying is their new policy of keeping multiple used copies in the drawer and when you bring the one from the shelf, they will put that aside and give you one from the drawer. You have to keep an eye on that. It is nothing malicious as in that case they simply want to put the "floor copy" back out. However, I often choose a copy from the floor where the case and contents are in good condition (with some even having original DLC codes, etc - you at least have a shot of those still being valid). But then the one they pull out of the drawer is just some random copy that may not be nearly as nice. If you don't pay attention you might not find out till after you leave. But again, I've never had them give me any attitude when I ask them to switch it back to the original copy I brought up.

Well, I have a lot more patience I guess. Waiting a couple of days isn't that big of a deal for me. I almost never go to Gamestop. Every time I've gone in the last 5 years (to Gamestop) has been for a niece or nephew that wanted to go in. I stopped buying there after they sold me a used game for $1 less than a new game. I didn't realize the price difference immediately and they didn't point it out. When I found out, I was pissed off and decided never to go there again. You have even more reason to not shop at Gamestop than I do.

By the way, Gamestop just settled a lawsuit in California if you live there.

Nope Nevada

Oh one other thing, someone gave me a used game from Gamestop one time. The game was one of Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers. They put the game into a case for Echoes of Time. Since I don't have a receipt, the idiots won't trade the box out so a game box is sitting on my shelf with a completely different disk in it. Luckily the incompetent assholes also screwed up and put TWO instruction manuals in the box. I sold one on Ebay. I guess that's not really "lucky" per se but it made me feel better to sell the duplicate.

Wow sounds like a fucking douche. You should have "tripped" over a rack of games on the way out or just grab a shelf of games and fuck them all up but make it look like you're just looking at them or something.

You probably did the right thing but I dont know how you could keep your cool after he told you he didn't have to sell you anything.

Hopefully you get his ass fired.

Actually the part that pissed me off more was spoiling the game. I beat the game last night and everything he said was in the game, even the ending. I has kinda hoping he was talking out his ass when spoiling the game, but nope he ruined my experience

The fact that you bought the game anyway renders your whole complaint moot in my opinion. Speak with your wallet.

Why the hell would that render his complaint moot? It's still a legitimate complaint. They treated the customer badly. Just because the customer bought a product anyway doesn't mean that they DIDN'T treat him badly or that it doesn't matter. WTF is the matter with you?

I would have yelled and cursed at him if he kept discussing the game in front of me after I asked him not to.

And that there is my problem when I was younger I would have done just that, now I'm the old guy who takes it and when he gets home types up a angry worded letter. LOL
I would have yelled and cursed at him if he kept discussing the game in front of me after I asked him not to.
I would've said, "Sorry, I don't want the game anymore, since you just ruined the plot for me," and walked out.

Seriously, though, who fucking does that? Between that and his wife's experience... what an asshole.

OP, hope you're definitely not shopping at that GameStop anymore.
The fact that you bought the game anyway renders your whole complaint moot in my opinion. Speak with your wallet.
Sorry OP but I agree you should have suspended the transaction and found out how to give feedback to the store/district manager. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me... you left this store burn you twice and paid them to do so.

It's all good, man. He is working at a GS for years while you are spending time with your wife and winning at the tables. I dislike GS as well but I have never had a hard time like you. Just avoid that GS and that idiot that works there.

I actually try to avoid Gamestop nowadays. The only reason I sometimes shop there is because I get $25 gift cards from e-rewards surveys. Even then I try to just buy whatever online. I've dealt with a lot of annoying employees over the years. I don't put up with it anymore when I go in the store.

Surprisingly the one currently by my house is awesome. A lot of great employees who are normal and helpful people.

As for your experience I'm sorry you had to deal with that but...I don't think you should have taken his crap. I mean for him to say something like:

"I don’t have to sell to you if I don’t feel like it; you can take this one or nothing "

is complete bullshit. I would have just said ok I guess it's nothing then. Stand there and smile. Without being confrontational I'd get his name and store number and ask to speak with either a manager (if he wasn't one) or a district manager if he was in charge of this particular store. It's obvious he has 0 customer service skills and you shouldn't have to deal with his lack of decency.

There is something to be said about turning the other cheek but it isn't the first time he acted like a douche...so you can't even chalk it up to he was having a bad day the first time. If he is abusing you as a customer I'm assuming you aren't the only one who has to put up with him. A letter is ok but I think I'd prefer to see him squirm a little.

Update,

So get a call from the district manager and I tell him my story, he says he'll be at a different gamestop in a few days and I should come by and ask for him if I got time. Well today was that day and I was in the area so I stop by. I ask for him and he ends up giving me a 20 buck off a used game and says I don't have to worry I won't have to deal with the guy at the other gamestop store anymore. Not sure what that means but it sounds like he might have lost his job.

Happy ending to my story after all

Why did you reward the guy & the store by STILL buying the opened copy? You just sent him the message that he can be a jerk to you and get away with it with a sale. This is why Gamestop is still making tons of money, because people put up with their garbage.

Late to the party, but what these guys said. I don't shop there often but when they offer me the gutted crap I pass and leave. If I can't return it as new they they shouldn't be able to pass it off as new. Simple as that.
