I'm thinking of picking up a silver DS on playasia for my sister's upcoming birthday but I still need to know something. Since it's a Japanese DS, are there any regional differences between it and a normal American DS or is color the only regional difference?

If I recall correctly, the DS is not region locked. So you can play Japanese games on an American DS and vice versa. Other than that I don't believe there are any other differences other than choice of colors.

That's exactly what I was hoping for but, no offense, I can't count on your memory recollection so I must do more research (unless you've got concrete support for your mental recollection). ;) I don't want to pay $200+ for something she can't even use. Wikipedia wasn't helpful so I've still gotta do some googling. Can you (or anyone else) back up that info? Thanks, and again, please don't take any offense.

Go ahead and pick one up! The only complication you might run into is trying to play an American game against the same game from another country (Example: American Meteos can't play against European Meteos). However, that's not a DS system issue.

Sweet! Thanks to everyone who replied. :bouncy: My fears are all gone and I'm ordering from playasia right after this post.

That's ok. My sister is most likely going to only get American DS games so that won't be an issue. Thanks again.

I think you may have to stumble around the options to change the language from Japanese to English. Also you may need to purchase a separate US adapter.

I think US and Japan use the same AC plugs

I have the ice blue (japanese ds) ds and a NA ds,

they use the same adaptor, they can play japanese and NA games

I love the japanese ds manuals

why couldn't we get something cool like that?

what about voltages? and OP might have some trouble getting warranty repairs for jap DS on NA.

Again, thanks to everyone who replied. You guys set my mind at ease.

According to the website theforeigner-japan.com:

Electrical systems:
The Japanese power net is the same as found in the United States, using 100 Volt at 50/60Hz. The plug has the same shape as the American plugs, so electrical equipment can be hooked up without any problem.

linky

I was worried about that also but I did a lot more googling in addition to the info everyone in this thread gave.

As for the warranty repairs... well, my sis can figure that out herself. And I'm well-to-do enough that I could probably buy her a new one if need be.
Why do you need a Japanese DS?
Sounds like he wants a DS color that is unavailable in the US.

This. Seriously, why the hell would Nintendo limit my choices? I don't think silver would be too much of a difference vs. any other color unless they got a manufacturing deal in japan and the silver color is more expensive overseas... for that matter, why not follow in line w/ their region free setup to just offer international DSes instead of region specific ones and then simply switch outlet adapters when necessary?

Too late. She's already got a bf and I'm afraid that you'd show CAG her panties. And it's too bad too. From what I remember of your old pics, you'd be the spittin' image of her bf.
