SMB3 isn't close to the perfection of Yoshi's Island...

I know Yoshi's Island came out several years later but it's not even close, IMO. I have so many fond memories as a kid playing SMB3 and I even remember going to see The Wizard just to see it before it was released.

I just don't think it's as good as I remember it to be. Yoshi's Island is pure 2D bliss - there are tons of levels and each of them are fairly long - plus the 100 point scoring system for each level means I will be playing them over and over until I get a perfect score on everything. Don't get me wrong, SMB3 is still probably in the top 10 of all time 2D platformers (I still love it) but Yoshi's Island blows it away...

Yoshi's Island is in my opinion, the climax of the Mario series in my eyes... The game still looks beautiful today, and features some really unique and exciting gameplay.

I love SMB 3 as well, but Yoshi's Island is a true masterpiece.

I think it might even be my favorite side-scroller ever.

I think Yoshi's Island is a better overall game than Mario 3, but I enjoyed Mario 3 a lot more. Going through the game on my GBA is bringing back a lot of childhood memories.

Mario World, all the way. When my parents got me a SNES and Mario World for Christmas (I was 6, I think), I played the whole damn thing from start to finish, and loved every second of it. Mario 3 and Yoshi's Island are both excellent games, though.
I would second your assertion. I don't think that SMB3 is anywhere near as good as Super Mario World, either.
All this talk makes me want to get up and buy a copy of Yoshi's Island, unless, of course, someone wants to trade me their copy (hint, hint).

OK, I just played through World 5-3 last night for the first time in probably 6 or 7 years and it might be the coolest level ever. I forgot that the developers included this style of level (and only on this one level as I recall). Awesome.

I can't believe some of you don't even like this game but I guess that's not up to me to decide...

I'm with The Cheat and Tromack.

Super Mario World is the best Mario game ever.

Get that man a drink!!! Yoshi's Island has to be the fondest gaming memory of my childhood. A beautiful game through and through. In ever aspect a masterpeice, and in my humble opinion the pinnacle of not only the Mario series, but of 2d gaming in general.

Shame about the sequel though...
am I the only person who found YI very repetetive? It's fun and all, but it simply can not hold a candle to SMB, SMB 3 and SMW (IMO)
That is exactly the problem I have with it. I get about halfway through World 3 and quit

Super Mario World is probably my favorite, after all it was the first videogame I ever owned. Got the SNES when I was 4 or 5 with it for Christmas.

Blasphemer!

I hated SMB3.

It had a shitty save system and you couldn't go back and play levels over, at the level layouts were so bad that you never want to replay levels.

Yoshi's Island was a very good game. But SMB 3 is the better game. A better comparison would be SMB 3 versus SMW. I cannot choose between those two. They are the best.

I still think that SMB3 is the best of the 2D games. SMW was fun but being able to re-enter levels made it too easy. Yoshi's Island was a game of excess - there was just too much shit in each level that I could care about. The same thing happened with DKC2 and 3. They took a good game and added so many things to collect that it took away from actually finishing the game and instead tried to make the primary goal getting 100% of the items that they randomly threw into the levels.

I think one reason why i didnt like SMB3 so much when i got the GBA one last year was that it just felt like a huge step back from the two previous SMA games.I think they shoud have released SMB3 as the second SMA game.
