SNES troubleshooting

After sitting unused in my parent's basement since the mid-90's, I'm trying to get the SNES up and running. Having a little trouble. When I start a game it will briefly show a startup screen and play a little of the intro music, but will go no further after that. When trying to play A Link to the Past, black bars in a criss-cross pattern obscure portions of the triforce which fly in at startup.

The video cable is good (works fine for my GC) and the unit is getting power.

Any idea on what is wrong?

Thanks.

ps. I've cleaned both the carts & the SNES connectors with Isopropyl alcohol & a q-tip.

I good place to check is the repair board over at digital press for help. Cleaning the carts with with alcohol is a good start. I also use a contact cleaner such as Deoxit, which you can find at radio shack. I've found that stuff really helps.
Just curious, do you have the security bits to open the cart? It's kind of hard to really get them clean without opening it.

I ordered a 4.5mm security bit so I could open & clean the SNES console. Will this also open the carts? Or do I need a different size?

I had a similar problem with my SNES. It turned out to be the power cable. When I tried to boot up the system it would do the same thing and the red light would be on but apparently something happened inside the wire. I bought a new one and now it works fine. Hope this helps!
