Anybody know what bitrate and resolution most UMD movies are encoded at? I would imagine it being significantly lower than dvd's since it isn't necessary to waste space with a resolution/bitrate that won't even be properly utilized. So even if we had home UMD players, the quality of the video would be significantly lacking (maybe slightly better than Video CDs, or whatever they were called).
We can't be sure of that as it depends on the length of the movie.. a 2 hour movie on a 1.8GB of space (the size of an UMD) would be ~1800kbps. Of course, this is assuming it's just the movie with a stereo track.. no subtitles, no ProLogic sound, no multiple audio tracks (foreign language dubbing, director commentaries, etc.), and no bonus features. If any one of those features are included, then the bitrate would be much less...
So if they release a UMD player for home use and you watch a UMD on a smaller, regular TV than you probably won't think too much about the quality. But watch it on a HDTV, it'll definitely look like crap since an an average 2 hour DVD runs at twice the bitrate and includes multiple audio tracks, bonus features, subtitles, Dolby digital, etc.
