Hastings had this buy 1 get 1 for a penny on DVD's.. okay.. so I bought Dawn of the Dead, Elf, Riddick, Girl Next Door, etcetcetc, and had the penny DVD's as stuff I had no intention of watching.. Hellboy, Van Helsing, Envy, etc, all in all a total of 20 DVD's, 10 of which I got for a penny.

So after sitting here and debating whether or not to try it, I decided to do it. I took all the DVD's I got for a penny, all ten of 'em, down to a local used DVD shop. They said they'd give me fifty in store credit.. I pretended to be upset, said "That's all? That's a lot of new stuff there.." so he boosted me up to 60 in store credit. I then said "Actually, I just wanted to do a straight exchange.." and picked up a copy of WWE Day of Reckoning for 39.99, and a copy of THUG2 on XBox for 22.99 (they use ebgames.com as a price guide, so when they saw THUG for 24.99 on there, they lowered this one).. he shrugged and said okay, so out I walk with THUG2 and WWE DoR..

..and right into Rhino, which has this deal.. if you trade in two games that get $10 in store credit or more, you get a free game.. so I did this deal. THUG2 actually came up for $30 in store credit, so I went the credit route.. I used the $50 for RE4 (since trades are tax free, apparently) and have $5 in store credit left over.

And that's how I got RE4 for 10 cents.

But before anyone bashes me, I gave it to my brother. He has the Gamecube. Well, technically, it's mine, but he's keeping it for a while. I got a chance to play it.. and let's just say.. I won't be sleeping easy tonight.

How much did the DVDs cost?

Congrats man!

Hopefully this will stay flame free, I never understood why people here get so pissed over taking advantage of trade in offers. I highly doubt Scorch is fucking people over by trading in some crappy penny dvd's for RE4

9.99 each, buy 1 get one for a penny..

the DVD's I traded were.. let's see (I wrote 'em down before I took them)

Jersey Girl, Cabin Fever, Van Helsing, Hellboy, Envy, Gothika, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkahban (I have no interest in the books or movies), Scary Movie 3, The Shining (TV special), and Austin Powers: Goldmember.. all resellable stuff.

Not complicated. Took less than five minutes :)

The penny DVD's were ones that I had gotten before Christmas, so i've been sitting on them for a while. I've figured out how the DVD store prices DVD's and games, so I can get high credit there. I waited until Amazon.com marked 24 season 1 back to 49.99 and took it down there.. they gave me 30 credit for it, I paid $15. :p

Yeah, not bad, especially considering I left the house without a penny. Woo!

I'm confused. So you paid $100 on DVDs and used the bonus DVDs to trade in for RE4. But you still paid $100 for DVDs, right? It's a good deal if you plan on buying $100 worht of DVDs (and getting RE4 free), but otherwise quite costly.

Or is there something I'm completely missing?

Nice deal man, nice deal...

I'll give ya a shiney new Tennessee quarter for the game, thats more than double of what ya paid for the game.

Believe it or not, you're the second person to offer me a quarter for it.

I second that question

I kept the $100 worth of DVD's, and they're all titles I had planned on getting. So it's pretty much a "Man, I bought a ton of movies, traded in extra crap from a bonus deal and got a free copy of RE4!". I thought it was a hell of a deal.. $10 for each DVD, got $200 worth of stuff for around $100 (actually less because some of them were Christmas presents), then shifted it around.

So yeah. A ton of movies with a free RE4.

..from DVD's that cost a dime total to get. So therefore I still got RE4 for a dime, along with $100 in movies. So HAH! :p

Well consdiering that he's screwing over a mom and pop shop, which has less ability to take this kind of hit than a big chain like Gamestop or FYE, that pretty much means if people keep doing this then all that will be left are big chains. On the other hand, the local store around here just doubled all prices on used games, so who needs them anyways. I say good for you.

But, you could have just got 5 DVDs you wanted plus the 1 cent ones as 5 more you wanted . . . DVDs for $50 . . . right??? So, 10 DVDs you wanted for $50 . . . and buy RE4 with the other $50

He traded in the dvd's for crap credit and bought 2 of their crappy games. I'm going to go out on a limb and say they will probably make more money off the dvd's he traded in they would have off of those 2 games.

If you are talking about the store he traded the 2 games to, I don't think Rhino is a mom and pop store, but I could be wrong.

i was thinking the same thing. You ended up spending an extra $50 so you could get a "free" $50 game.

I guess getting 10 dvd's for $10 each is still a good deal but you could've gotten them for $5 each.

Nice deal, Scorch. Congrats.

I'm curious- what were the $10 DVDs that you kept? I know you listed four of them in your first post, but they all looked like fairly new releases to me, and I was surprised they were only $10 (Especially Dawn of the Dead) There are no Hastings around me...are their prices generally lower than other DVD sellers, or was this a special sale on top of the penny deal?

right, he still paid $100 out of pocket, and then used the bonus dvds(cost a penny each) to trade in for re4. And for the guy who said that mom and pop stores are the pits, I agree, their prices suck and good riddance.
But you had to buy 'Elf" to get the deal to work...

I just couldn't do that...

Now, Dawn of the Dead on the other hand, was pretty good.
So you'd rather buy Dawn of the Dead over Elf?

Hmmmm.

Dawn of the Dead was okay if you're up for some senseless violence, but Elf is going to be a holiday classic. Will was great in the movie.

My RE4 was courtesy of Rhino as well. :) Their trade-in deal is killer, and at any given time I have around $200 - $300 store credit there because of it. Oh, they won't let you trade in for store credit, true...but they have a 7 day return policy on games, so if you get something you don't like you can return it and THEN they will give you the credit. ;)

Because of using existing credit I couldn't trace where the RE4 credit came from. But I can say on average I pay $15-20 for new releases because of that deal.

I don't care about people taking advantage of trade deals. I just get pissed when someone buys all 10 copies of one game so they can jack them up on ebay or something. See example with my commentary here: Linkey

As for Mom and Pop stores, imagine a world where only ebgames existed. Feeling ill yet? Every ebgames I walk into feels the same way and has the same drones working there telling me stuff like "Fantavision is game of the month!" only because they have 200 copies in the back. Mom and Pops keep the deals in the big stores going because the big stores want to destroy them.

One more thing, my avatar is annoying as hell, isn't it!
