Hey guys, I finally have a computer capable of handling modern games (Dell XPS--yes!), and I've been thinking about getting into FFXI. I've been a fan of the series since its debut on the NES, and it's always annoyed me that I haven't been able to play this one yet. I didn't want to play it on PS2 b/c it seemed cumbersome w/out a keyboard, and expensive (HDD+netwok adapter+maybe a keyboard).
So, who has some advice for a beginner? Is it worth getting into after all this time, if only for a few months?
Assuming I get in--which I probably will--does anybody have any recommendations for a new guy? Job classes that are a good idea?
Bear in mind that I don't know much about the game, and don't have any MMORPG experience (though I've played dozens of rpgs).
Thanks!

I personally don't play and make fun of my friends that do (they play way too much), but I can tell you from experience that the game is pretty easy to get into, and the best thing to do, if you're interested in playing with certain anyones (probably not), is to make sure you get a hold of a world pass to play in the same "universe". And from what I was told, while you can definitely start of going solo, the game gets party heavy later down the road. So, trying to get into a "link shell" community would probably be your best bet for future advice and party members. Anyways, as far as opinion goes, I'd say yeah, World of Warcraft looks like a much better game, but that probably doesn't matter to you since you probably want to get the Final Fantasy experience. It's a decent game, and a couple of my friends can't seem to get enough of it (nerds!).

It's not like the rest of the FF's. Well except XII, which takes after XI. Free up plenty of time if you're going to get into this. It's a great game, but it's not easy on the noobs either.

I played FF11 for monthgs and months....I became very obsessive, playing 16 hours a day at times.... There is no reward in the game... stay away.... it smells real bad and is too hard. Now if you wanna play a real game get city of heroes for pc, that game is fun til the last drop.

OK, OK. Seriously, you DEFINITELY want a keyboard for it. You'll be working with people a lot and you need a keyboard for consistent communication. If switching between the controller and keyboard is unnecessary to you, just use the keyboard. You can use it to walk, talk, everything. That's what I did and it was pretty easy for me.

I played for a very long time and have 2 things to say

1. Get WoW instead

2. If you do with FFXI make sure you pick a key (needed) class since the # or people playing is dwindling. I wouldnt recommend playing a monk or dragoon. They are the classes that have to sit around the longest trying to find a party.

Hey, we all know how different Wow is, but this guy is a huge FF fan, so let him enjoy it. I use to play FFXI and all I can say is learn macros and quick response stuff like "ctrl+r".

After playing FFXI for 5 months on my ps2, I'd have to agree. I'm cancelling my content id at the end of the month...between the extreme amount of time you need to progress even minimally in this game, the gil sellers/botters and messed up game economy, party waiting times, and various "improvement" nerfs by SquareEnix that only add to the amount of gametime, I've had it.

Monks and dragoons, fun classes to play, could literally sit around for an entire month and not get one game invite. And you can't solo this game past level 10 at all, unless your a beastmaster...but, here's the catch, you have to solo another job to 30 before you can even become a beastmaster.

I've been playing World of Warcraft for a month and have been having much more fun than the entire time I've played FFXI. PLus I've had some FFXI friends, higher level players, migrate over to WoW who don't plan on going back either. And there are almost no botters or real money traders in this game....either Blizzard catches them and bans them, or the ingame players themselves find them and take matters into thier own hands (basically camping them, fighting them over and over until they leave).

As soon as me and my friends ding 60 in WoW (so far the maximum level cap in WoW), we plan on camping those real time money traders who made our lives so miserable in other games like FFXI!

I actually enjoy FFXI... granted as of late I haven't done anything in the game (personal/real life problems  ). Still, it's a good way to get you feet wet in the MMORPG world. Alot of people seem to be leaning toward the WOW community and from what I have heard it's probally worth it. So since you are goin the PC route you may consider shopping around for a nice and cheap copy to install and update. The first month is free (apart of the cost of the game) and I wouldn't say it's not worth checking out... I like it.
