Some games lack demos on XBL? (See: Alan Wake)

I was digging around for neat demos to try out and noticed that Alan Wake seems to lack one entirely and Mass Effect 2 is advertising its demo that arrived late. I thought all games on XBL had to have a trial? What gives?

Indie games aren't required to have demos. Only Arcade games.

Retail games have demos if their publisher thinks they'll be helpful or as time allows.

kinda related, but awhile back I was gonna download the sonic 2006 demo for my nephew and it was no longer on the marketplace. kinda odd to see it gone.

The Indie Games aren't required to have demos because they automatically have time limits on them. You're free to download and play and of the Indie Games on the service but unless you pay for the game, there will be a timer kill screen appearing once time is up.

... What?

I am pretty sure you are wrong about the Indie games. I've never seen anything about a time limit on them.

There has always been a time limit for Indie trials. It was four minutes at first but was extended to eight minutes at some point to address complaints that it was too short before.

a demo for alan wake could work(or have worked) the game is linear, so they could have just picked a spot and ended at a spot and that could have been it.

You're lucky they have so many demos for games now. Back in the day, a new demo was a big deal. Anyone remember waiting for The Outfit to go up?

Yeah, they definitely were. I remember everyone talking about the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo for months. I bought Zone of the Enders completely blind just so I could have that demo. ZoE ended up being a good game, but I wouldn't have cared either way

Demos can, and do, hurt development of games in most cases.

Every retail game I worked on that we had to make a demo for lost 4-5 weeks of development time on average while we made it. It takes A LOT of effort to create a demo (in most cases).

I wish every retail game had a demo, but unfortunately not. I believe Battlefield Bad Company 2 does not have a demo, for example. And that's just one off the top of my head.
