i'm looking to get a soundbar (hopefully 2.1) for 100 dollars or less. my tv speakers are going out and i'm gonna need to get some other sound going. it's be awesome if it had hdmi or optical so that i could plug in my consoles

Soundbars usually have pretty crappy reviews and aren't really considered better than tv speakers at your price range. You'd probably get better results and spend less money if you got some good powered computer speakers and plug them into the headphone jack. That way, you don't have to mess with needing a bunch of connections.

I picked up a decent sony receiver off craigslist that does 5.1 for $65. Then I used the optical output on the back of my TV and plugged it into the optical input (TOSLink) on my new used receiver. TV sounds so much better now in 5.1. Games are great when you can hear stuff from all around you.

My TV speakers were going out as well. I have a plasma and the speakers are built into the bezel around the TV. Something sounded loose inside after the last time I moved...so I got the receiver and havent looked back since. Super simple setup with one extra optical cable going from my TV to me receiver. Sounds awesome. ;)

Are you connecting the receiver to any external speakers and if so which speakers?

Picked up a Panasonic SC-HTB10 over a year and a half ago and still absolutely love it. WORLDS better than my TV's built in speakers (and I didn't have room or money for a full speaker setup and receiver). It has an optical input so I just ran the optical out on my TV into it. It does also have HDMI input fwiw but I do not use it.

sadly my tv does not have a headphone nor optical out. for my movie watching i have 2.1 speakers hooked up to my pc. i can't use them with my consoles or tv set though. that is why i am looking for the soundbar. i can easily hook up my 360/ps3/pc with optical or my tv with digital audio. ideally i was looking for a 2.1 pc speaker set with optical inputs but they seem to be very few (and pricey)

check your best buy open box items, i recently bought a htib 5.1 (sony htss 380) for $100 only and i also purchased a 4 year warranty for $20. so far im liking it watching movie in our bedroom. definitely worth it.
