Well, I recently joined the new gen of hardware and am trying to catch up on some of those last-gen titles that thanks to my enormous backlog I never got to.

One of the biggest series I neglected last gen was Borderlands.  I have both 1 and 2, what do you guys think, start with the first or jump straight to 2?  I highly doubt I'll ever get to both so I'm wondering if this is a case where part 2 is hands-down the favorite or does the first one have some champions?

Thanks!

Two is easily better.  Two contains the PCs from One as NPCs so I guess you get a moment of "Oh, it's Brick... hehe" but it's not as though they were fully realized characters in One.  Two is mechanically better and has a better story and more funny bits.  If you're only playing one of them, you should absolutely make it BL2.

Part 2 is way better than the first one. You'd miss out on some references to the first story, but you can read the wiki and figure out what happened. The Presequel is good too. Even though it's set between the first and second games, the entirety of the game is a flashback after part 2.

Tl;Dr: Play 2 if you only have time for one game.

Thanks Ziv and Syntax Error:

I think thats a clear case for part 2, I only really have time for one game in the series and those are exactly the things I was wondering about.  Now to get started this weekend!

2, easily. I played the first to its entirety and the second one has far more going for it with story, content, and longevity in the community. Usually, the sequels to many major titles tend to be successful to their originators, offering more support over a long term with new content and a greater player base (alas, Call of Duty suffers from going too far with this, and Battlefield wants to be competitive with doing the same).
