Why is it so difficult to find out what state and local offices are up for re-election?

The internet does an incredibly poor job of telling me which districts I am in, what positions are being contested, and who is running for those offices.
Without even getting into getting unbiased opinions on those people running for offices.

What especially sucks is judges. There were like four different Colorado supreme judges, I think, who were up for re-election. I had no idea who they were, so I just said yes to re-elect them because I haven't heard anyone bitch about them.

Your State and county government should have websites telling you what voting district and precinct you reside in. And check the websites of your local papers. You can also go to the nearest library and get all the info you need from the librarian. Librarians know more shit than you'd expect, it's their job.

The state government site (new york) is less than ideal and very unfriendly, especially because there are so many overlaying districts. Websites of local papers, such as the New York Times is also poor for such info.

I eventually found a summary of the sample ballot that I would see, which is all it takes, on smartvoter.org
