Steam Weekend Deal Sept 26-29 - All Rockstar Games titles 50% off.

This is awesome. I was just thinking I'd like to play the Max Payne games again. Almost bought the full bundle, but I'm never going to play most of those games.

In case anyone's wondering there's a Max Payne bundle for $7.50 with both games.

Rented GTAIV from Gamefly on 360, didn't care for it. Would any of Rockstar's other games appeal to me? The reason I didn't like GTAIV was because the story wasn't engaging enough in the beginning and the sandbox type element didn't appeal to me. Max Payne looks interesting, but not sure about it

I think I'm just going to go with the Max Payne pack and the GTA pack. The extra $7.50 isn't worth it to me for Manhunt and the other extra games.

That's why my new rule is: Don't buy anything from Steam unless it's at least 25% off. I scored the Counter-Strike Bundle (CSS,CS1.6, Condition Zero, and the other games that comes with CS1.6) for only $15 (normally $30), and Audiosurf for $5 a couple weekend deals back.

Well, I don't own vice city on my ps2, but I do have san andreas, so now is the time for me to visit that lovely city again.

Can anybody tell me if there is a difference between 3 of Rockstar's classic games offered on steam (GTA1 & 2, Wild Metal) and on this website? http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/

I remember seeing this site being up a few years back and it is still here. Yet they charge on steam for these titles? I never tried to download it from Rockstar's site, I'm just that this seemed strange to me.

They're only available in the complete GTA/Rockstar packs, so it's more like they're giving them away as bonuses instead of charging for them.

If you want an engaging story and firm linearity (instead of sandboxy-ness), then Max Payne will definitely appeal to you. They're good games.

None.

Technically, they don't. You can't buy GTA1, GTA2, or Wild Metal by themselves on Steam. They're only available as parts of bundles, so, technically, they don't carry a price on their own (but you can't download them on their own for free on Steam, which I don't really understand). Either way, they're "free," just not by themselves.

Damn, love the Max Payne games. Will pick those up. Hmmm this reminds me, I wonder if Alan Wake will ever come out, vaporware at this point.

wow, i flipped my lid when i saw this weekend's deal. i've been wanting to pick up the older GTAs. i never did finish GTA3 or GTA:SA. i'll most likely pick up the GTA complete pack and the max payne complete pack. thanks valve/steam!

What a deal! I was prepared to buy Vice City for $10 from Target's bargain software section tomorrow. Steam saves me the trip :)

Yeah, I just got a new pc and have been looking forward to some good deals on Steam. I jumped in and got the whole collection. Sure I've got most of them but it will be nice to have them all in one system and not have to pull out old xboxes and ps2's. Thanks Steam.

Steam is the only form of DRM I support. It's DRM done right. With steam, I can redownload any game I own as many times as I'd like, on any computer I like. DRM doesn't get any better than that.

Just snagged the Max Payne bundles. I've been craving to play those games, but I'm 400 miles for home. Now that I have it in my steam account, I'll be able to play those games anywhere I wish.

Got the Max Payne pack, still need to play max payne 2 but figured I would just get the pack just in case I want to play 1st one again. Awesome deal.

Agreed. Steam DRM doesn't suck which is why I never think twice about buying Steam games.

Steam just hogs too many resources. Maybe it's been a while since I tried a steam game. I might give it a try again. I just like buying a game and playing it with no strings attached

Does it, now?

Notice that this is it's RAM usage while a game is running (in this case, Portal). When you're not playing games and simply have Steam sitting inactive in the system tray, it often only uses between 5 and 10 megs.

Again, it sounds like a lot of your opinions about Steam are based on criticisms that only applied to it years ago, in it's infancy. Unless your computer is considerably older than Steam itself, the
Will all of the GTA games run on Vista?
Don't know about that, but the original Max Payne has a Vista glitch that causes cut scenes to be mute. As bad as this may sound, the actual CD Max Payne also has this problem so it isn't native to Steam only. It can also be easily fixed with a 3rd party patch put out buy a guy named "sox".

I can confirm that San Andreas runs fine using Vista 32-bit.

Might bite on the GTA pack, been looking to get San Andreas for PC for a while (the modding community is awesome for it), but for $5 more, I can get the other GTA's as well!

I had been meaning to get the Max Payne bundle because I lost my discs in a move (never happens to me!), but this 50% off makes it sweeter.

Thanks OP for bringing this to my attention. The Pills would ease the pain.

What's up with Max Payne's stretched resolution on widescreen displays?

Is there a way to fix this?

Nope.

Only partially true. Most publishers (including Valve) allow this, but the jerks at EA limit Crysis Warhead to five maximum downloads. This completely nulls the benefits of the Steam platform. Valve failed to disclose this fact until a week after Warhead's release, which makes me wonder how many folks purchased Warhead thinking they'll get unlimited installs. From Warhead's Steam page:

3rd-party DRM: SecuROM™
5 machine activation limit
WHY HAVE DRM ON TOP OF STEAM!? It's like Bioshock all over again.
They also have Stubbs: zombie without a pulse for 5 bucks.
That was last week. It's back to $20, now.

"Five maximum downloads" is a really, really misleading way to put it. Five concurrent installs is more accurate. If you uninstall the game properly, you get an install credit back.

It's not Valve's job to scream in your face that the game had the same copy protection as the retail version. Valve has always allowed developers to use any additional copy protection methods they please.

There is actually one reason. Publishers often like to use the same copy protection method on all versions of a game (download and retail), because they fear that if, for instance, they had a retail version of a game that used SecuROM, and a Steam version that didn't, that the executable from the Steam version could be used to more easily reverse-engineer a cracked executable for the game. Silly, of course, because games get cracked regardless, but, that's the thinking.

How does GTA 2 compare to GTA 1? I bought the GTA pack and tried GTA 1 but that sucked, and I am wondering if it is worth the download time to try GTA 2.

I've been playing the Max Payne games. Ah, the memories. The first MP hasn't aged all that well, but MP 2 is still as awesome as I remember it...from a few years ago. :D

Anyway, they run very well on my system (2.33 GH Duo Core, Geforce 8600 GTS). Fantastic deal at $7.49.
It's not Valve's job to scream in your face that the game had the same copy protection as the retail version. Valve has always allowed developers to use any additional copy protection methods they please.
Of course it is, which is why they state the additional DRM on the page (a week late, I might add). You also assume that Steam subscribers are aware of the retail restrictions. (Does EA state the DRM conditions on the actual box?)

If a third party publisher adds additional DRM on top of the DRM subscribers expect from Steam, Valve ought to let people know promptly and honestly.

i already own all the original GTA games (rockstar even gave the first one away as a free download for a long time on a secret page on their website),

HOWEVER, scoring both max payne games for 7.50 with the max payne movie coming out in a few weeks seems awsome.
