Update your Wii's NOW! Storage solution went live today to correspond with Iwata's keynote!

Once you clear your games off the Wii internal memory, you can launch games from the SD! It takes a minute (not literally), as the Wii will move the game from SD to internal memory then run it! No more moving stuff around! Plus it's nice to see all the channels full.

The best news?

MY 4GB WORKAROUND STILL WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!!:applause::bouncy:

^^Bigger games like this take maybe 7-15 seconds to load and play. Smaller games are damn near instantaneous!:hot:

^^This is my unpacked 4GB non-SDHC card. Notice the available blocks. SDHC WORKS TOO NOW!! I only tested 8GB tho...

Yeah, some of the live-blogs were talking about the update that was released this morning, and Kotaku said that Nintendo would announce the storage solution and Rock n' Roll Climber (Balance board sequel to Ice Climber).

Pictures incoming.

Hnag on guys! This gets BETTER!!

YOU NO LONGER NEED TO PAD THE 4GB CARD! I cleared it off, put it in, and it displayed over 30,000 blocks of space!

But EVEN BETTAR THAN THAT!!

I popped in the 8GB SDHC card I use for my GP2X, and it READ and WROTE!!

SDHC CARDS WORK NOW!!! How big? I dunno, but my 8GB worked like a CHAMP!!

THE 4GB WORKAROUND SOLUTION IS OFFICIALLY OBSOLETE!! REJOICE!!!

Sadly, I'm not excited as I should be given that this should've been in the system at launch. (Or at least with the introduction of WiiWare).

But in either case, I'm glad it's here. I can actually start using my Wii Nintendo Points again and install all those pointless channels that I never use.

I'd have to think that SDHC drives are already in the Wii else there would have to be data conflicts if one would fill up the card.

I wonder if one could have used the 4gb non SDHC cards before this update without problem.

Seems weird to have a limit when there isn't one.

Short answer: YES, or else my sticky FAQ above would have never been relevant.

Another cool thing is that once you initially load a game, the Wii automatically manages that load, meaning that when you turn your Wii on the next time, go to SD load, and pick that game again, it will load instantly. This will remain untill a)you manually delete the SD load file from your Wii Channel management menu or b) you allow the Wii to manage your space as you load various titles and it just might pick that particular game to delete to make space for something else on the fly.

And this is all done in the background...pretty effin sweet!!
sweet deal now.

The other nice thing is picture cards being viewed now that are larger than 4gb and SDHC correct?
Dunno what you mean by picture cards, but 4GB and SDHC cards work fine now.:bouncy:

Maybe even up to 32GB!! Who the fuck needs a Hard Drive now? LOL!!

Joystiq reports that it supports up to 32GB SDHC cards.

Thats a lot of VC and WiiWare games.:D

I knew that rumor about a hard drive was nonsense.

They finally figured out you should just use the damned SD card slot.

This is excellent news. I don't know why they ever had limitations or had any file-swapping nonsense to begin with.

I'm just glad that it was fixed when I bought my Wii, so I never had to put up with it.

I think I am going out today and buying a 2000 points card. There have been a couple games I wanted to download but haven't because of space issues. This is great! Why didn't they do this from the beginning?

What are the ramifications of this update on the a) homebrew channel, b) having individually updated the shop channel and IOS51?

I saw some screenshots of the Homebrew Channel in the new SD card menu, but am unsure about installing the newest update.

Aaaaand hackers will figure out how to launch full Wii games off an SD card in three.. two.. one..

but seriously, this is fantastic news.

Well if they were going to figure that out, you would think they would have already done it considering that the method that Nintendo is using is identical to how Rock Band and GH:WT are handling DLC tracks on the Wii.

This is great and it works better than I expect, though not as well as I would have hoped. I would have hoped that it would have shown the games as if they were on the console, but no biggy.

Wow! Awesome! However, do we really need to remove all our games and such from internal memory? What about game saves? I'm going to order an SDHC card now definitely. Anyone know what a big, fast, good, but inexpensive one is?

It doesn't read save files so you should leave them on your Wii. Also, you have to have enough space on the Wii to load the game to the Wii memory. Keep about 400 blocks open.

Game saves need to stay on the internal memory.

I would recommend moving all of the smaller VC games to an SD card and leaving the bigger WiiWare titles saved to internal memory. The VC games load super fast while N64 and larger games take 7-10 seconds to load before you can play them.

Also, Strell noted that games that use WiiConnect 24 will not work from the SD card.

Big cactus! Great news, I can't believe 32GB cards work. Can't wait until they cost 10-20 bucks (which is probably a ways off, but still...)

Even so, 8 GB cards are pretty cheap right?

So, what's everyone keeping on their SD card..and on the Wii? :whistle2:k
I put everything on my SD card for the moment.. I have 1018 blocks on my Wii! Haven't seen that in years!
What's funny, is that with all of the VC/Wiiware games I have on my SD card.. I also have about 500+ photos on it....and I have 6862 blocks left. Just nice!

does anyone know if you keep ur vc games on ur card if you can play the games on ur camera. cuz if u keep ur photos on the sd card u can look at them on the wii. thx for any help

Only caveat I see is that the SD load page has a limit of 20 pages, or 240 games. So a 32GB card is kind of moot unless...

a) You download only N64, Turbo-CD, NeoGeo, and WiiWare titles
b) You have a SHIT TON of DLC for Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band

Barring that even an 8 or 16GB card is more than enough.

I have a 2GB..with pics...and I have close to 7000 blocks. 2GB, IMO, is more than enough.
The good thing is that, the SD card will hold 240 games. So, basically, if that EVER gets filled..you can put all your small games on the Wii, and keep the larger ones on the SD card.

I still don't know how I want to keep mine set up. At least now I have options.

I bought an 8gb sd card for $20 the other week.

I have a cheapo 256 MB card in there that I used to back up old games and saves to. Today I moved all of my VC games and some WiiWare games to it and the card still has over 1000 blocks left.

I think a 2 GB card will last a long-ass time unless you are consistently downloading WiiWare stuff and even then, just buy another 2 GB card - they are cheap as hell.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think Nintendo enabled SDHC with future plans in mind. There has been talk of streaming movies and stuff like that which would need some storage for caching, etc.

this still didn't solve what i feel is an even bigger problem... locked save data. i still can't move or copy data for online games like endless ocean, mario kart, or the monster that is smash brothers. which means that, in time, after enough games are saved, i still might not have the room needed to boot stuff from an sd card.

What I'm hoping is that we now see game patches. Patches could be stored on SD or internal memory and loaded when the game loads. I'm dreaming, I'm sure. In any case, I think the notion that x GB is enough is off. It all depends on what Nintendo and/or third party developers do with this new feature. With the ability to have up to 32 GB of storage, I can see more games offering real DLC.

I was so excited to show my BF about this. He basically said what we (or most of us) where thinking. "Oh wow, now we can actually play it again!"

Which is true. I've had so many moments where I wanted to play Sin & Punishment, or Bonk's Revenge, or just something else..but really did not want to go through the options and doing all that.. AND having to do MATH and figure out blocks and shit. GTFO.

This...minus the boyfriend parts.;)
Cool.

Does this mess up that one certain channel?
From what I've seen, the Wii treats existing channels as just that - existing channels.

The way it was phrased somewhere else was that the method used to enable the channel is what Nintendo guns for - not the channel itself. So once it is there, updates like this seem to ignore it. True, new firmware could break it, but it seems this one doesn't.

I.e., like on The Office when Kevin said he can't bring beer to work, but there's no rule about brewing it there.

Think of this as a loophole.

I think I did read, however, that if you are planning such things and haven't done the method yet, this will close that entry down.

Make sense?

It was twilight, and I was hacking away at some trees. But unfortunately, my ax broke and it no longer works.

Has anyone had some issues with channels on the SD card? I was trying to test a couple of VC titles, and couldn't get some of them to work. Kirby's Dreamland 3 refused to copy over from the SD to the Wii. In addition both Cubello and Space Invaders Get Even show up as ?'s as the channel icon, and refuse to launch off the SD card as well.
