Strange ps3 online issue

I have bought a second hand 40gb phat ps3. Strange issue.....blus games etc all work fine, if I try to click on playstation network or go online in a game and it freezes! Just left with sparkles on screen.

It's on 3.60. Any ideas??

can you sign onto the PSN?

How recently did you buy it? Is it possible that the last owner's actions may have caused it to be banned from the network?

I had similar issues of just getting the sparklies when my hard drive was corrupt. Not saying it is or isn't but that's the only experience I've had.
