system overheating crash

I was wondering who has had their system crash and totally burn up...and for those who have what where the warning signs? Did it just one day get hot and shut off and not work? Mine has shut froze up times over the course of my time owning it since January 1st, is that unusual? should I get the nyko fan?
hopefully someone can answer all those ?'s for me.

I am interested in this answer also. I have had the 360 for only a couple of weeks and I have noticed the freezing and disconnecting issues. I would like to see what I should do should I take it back or buy a fan. I have my 360 on the ground by itself so it has enough air too.

Game consoles lock up, hell, even PCs lock up. A random one here and there, probably isn't much to worry about. Matter of fact, every console I've had locked up on something occasionally.
If it's something consistant, you probably have a problem that is going to get worse.

My views on the system coolers are fairly unpopular, but here it goes. Consoles, more so with the more powerful ones, get hot. The system is designed to compensate for this with various airflow and cooling solutions. If it's getting hot enough to crash, the there is a problem with either your console hardware in particular, or where you have it placed.

If it's a a matter of air circulation because of placement, then the air cooler is possibly a good solution for you.

On the other hand, if you have your console in reasonable airflow conditions (ie: an open shelf in an entertainment center) and it still overheats, the external coolers are just prolonging what you should get taken care of before the warranty expires.
In short, if it's defective, the Nyko fan is a bandaid on what will become a gushing wound again eventually.

Personally, I think these are something that is the new neat thing to have, made popular by the modding community. Somehow some people associate anything running cooler with it running faster. Again, if there isn't another underlying problem, the design of the console should give it proper cooling.

Nyko intercooler works fine for me. I only got it because my system is in an entertainment center and air doesn't flow that easily in there. As far as crashing, I think that's normal, mine doest once in a while

My 360 has frozen a few time while playing Oblivion, but it's always been when I've been playing for several hours and the air that's coming out is pretty hot.
Both the 360 and the power supply has more then enough breathing room.

I got a 3 year replacement plan when I ordered my 360. I didn't want to take a chance with something that costs $400.
My powerbrick is sitting on the carpeted floor, with a few wires under it, but it has at least a few inches of space between the powerbrick and anything else sitting on the floor.

I just bought a 360 this weekend and I've noticed that when I take any game out of it, its extremely hot. I have it standing vertical on my hardwood floor, so I don't think its a problem with air circulation. Should I just forget about it or take it back? I bought a 2 year replacement plan from Best Buy, but I'd rather not use it already, thats $50 gone and another $50 spent if I have to get a new Xbox. Any suggestions?

Had mine since launch no real problems besides a few freezes in King Kong. It used to get really hot sitting out in the open on top of my enertainment center though. I bought a Nyko Intercooler when they came out and then put my 360 inside on one of the shelves and it's always cool to the touch even after long gaming sessions on hot days (I don't have air conditioning). The thing costs $20 and moves LOTS of air, I recommend it to anyone.

I'm on my 2nd 360, I bought my first about a month ago and had some issues with it, so I exchanged it. The replacement I got has been flawless so far, maybe one lockup if even that.

The first one I think if I would have took the faceplate off and put it back on it would fixed the problem it was having, it was turning on by itself at times. I always thought the power button felt funny, it wasn't till I exchanged it that I realized that the original one's button was pressed almost all the way in.

Had mine since launch and never had it freeze or anything. Of course, the system sits horizontal and gets plenty of air where it is located.

Some launch titles tend to make my console a little warmer than other titles (Specifically Kameo and Most Wanted). The newer games (GRAW, Oblivion, etc.) do not, even after extended play times.

Is it normal for there to be some really hot air blowing out of the back while I'm playing Uno? My system even froze earlier while I was playing it for about 10 minutes.
